aclrecocomeback

Jess Allan

I tore my Acl playing touch footy in Feb 2017 I had a knee reconstruction in June. This is my comeback journeyπŸ€™πŸΌπŸ»πŸ‰

Just over 2 months ago I started focusing a lot of my energy on these particular exercises, to focus on my glutes, hamstring and quad strength. At the time of These clips I was about 5 months post surgery it was the first time I attempted any of these exercises so I was very wobbly. It took me a while to get use to the technique of each exercise as I always seem to want to rush everything I do. After including these specific exercises into my rehab I noticed an increase in strength and stability within my knee and pain also decreased. I am now past 6 months and I am still icing my leg as I still do get a little bit of pain every now and then.

6 months post surgery and it’s been a busy couple of weeks! Celebrating the 6 month mark by hiking 2140 metres in 30 mins up this little beauty β›° Mount Maunganui, watching the sunrise πŸŒ… was spectacular, the views from here are amazing and it was very satisfying that my knee made it up considering this was the first type of activity I’ve tried since surgery. My knee pulled up a little sore but it’s defiantly beginning to feel stronger and stronger πŸ€™πŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ˜β›°πŸŒ…

At 12 weeks I was cleared to start implementing light running & jumping exercises into my rehab. I waited a few days to try it out as my confidence was very low. Here is my first time in 8 months trying jogging & jumping. First time jogging I had a bit of pain in my knee every time my foot connected to the ground, I did this multiple times and each time it felt better & better, and my confidence increased every time. I didn't want to stop running, it felt amazing I only took this first video I wish I took one at the end of this session. At the end of this session I felt so good. My jumping and landing has a long way to go, I'm shifting majority of my weight onto my left leg when I'm landing out of fear for my right knee.. I do get a bit of pain when doing the single leg jumps hence why I can't completely land on my right leg and hold it. Hopefully it won't be too long until I can achieve this. @jessicalea17

Comparing scars with my besty who also went through a knee reconstruction a few years ago. @tanya_kate59 played at the #trlauschamps over the weekend and killed it, I was very jealous that I couldn't be out there on the field next to her but hopefully this time next year I'll be back out there.. #trl #touchfooty

Recovery is not a straight line forward. It includes bumps, stops, good days, bad days, progress and setbacks along the journey. Believe me I've had many setbacks over the last few weeks which has demotivated me to work on my knee and it's progress. I've fallen down stairs multiple times at home and work πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ I've fallen in the shower and couldn't get myself up, I had a big scare at work and here My little nephew thought he would try to make things a little more tougher πŸ™„Some days I feel good the very next I feel as if I can hardly walk. Here's me crying trying to achieve something that was so effortless before. Over the last couple of weeks this recovery process has made me doubt myself, doubt the dream that I'll ever get back to doing what I love to do most, and has left me feeling beaten. I'm sharing this because I have had so many messages of support and from other people doubting themselves because they have seen a post from me and they may not be where they expected to be in their recovery. Its so important to know that every knee, injury, surgeon, recovery ect is different so we should not compare our recovery to anyone else's.. you also should not compare your own knees (my good knee or my bad knee) to each other. I feel that most of social media only shows the happy moments, the successes and positive things. Behind every smile there are many challenges, hard days and moments of doubt for all of us. I know that these setback moments are only temporary, I know tomorrow will be a better day for me and anyone else who may be going through a tough time.

Progress shot from week one to now at week 10. I've been lazy and sick so have not done as much exercising or strengthening for my knee as I would have liked over the last 2 weeks, I haven't had any physio therapy either. I'm hoping to be back in the gym and running soon 🀞42 weeks to go 😏
