“For most young adults in university, the habits of an unhealthy lifestyle are quite common. I was no stranger to this path and by the end of my second year, I found myself sitting at just over 240 pounds. Not just that, but I was struggling heavily with self confidence issues because of my lifestyle choices at the time. •
When I met Barry in the summer 2014, everything changed. He showed me the benefits of both working hard in the gym and the habits to build decisions outside of it. #FlexFriday Tip: Rolling Tricep Extensions with a SLOW negative🔥🔥🔥

Why they’re awesome: - The arms respond really well to slow eccentric (negative) work💪🏼
- The “rolling”start gives you the leverage to use a heavier weight then you might have been able to handle otherwise, and takes a ton of stress off your elbows👌🏻
•
Aim to get the weight up explosively and try to take 3-6 seconds to lower it⏱
•
3-4 sets of 6-10 reps is plenty enough to temporarily inhibit your ability to straighten your arms 😂
•

Recent research (performed today, by me, on myself🙋🏻‍♂️) shows that DAD STRENGTH might be a real thing💪🏼

Today I hit an all-time personal best of 515lbs for one rep on the Trap Bar💥💥💥
•
For me, the most exciting part of this is that over the last year I’ve done ZERO lifting with weights above 80% of my one rep max (where most lifting-related injuries happen)🤷🏻‍♂️
•
The lesson: Unless you compete in a Strength Sport (Powerlifting, Weightlifting) you can increase your strength just fine by making steady progress in the moderate (5-8) rep ranges WITHOUT putting yourself at a higher risk for injury🤕
•
If you play sports, that’s KIND OF important. If you’re missing time on the ice, field or court because of something you did in the gym - you’re doing it wrong, period.

Was on a bit of a hiatus over the holidays, but I’m back at it with a quick tip for optimizing some@of your core training💥💥💥

Here’s very simple (not easy) strategy I use to target the deeper muscles of the core during “timed” exercises like planks and pallor holds:
•
Rather than do your sets for time, do them for a set amount of deep belly breathes - inhale deeply through your nose, trying to fill your belly with as much air as possible (you should feel your sides and low back expand) then FORCEFULLY exhale through your mouth🤯
•
On top of the benefits I mentioned above you’ll also add a solid level of intensity to some otherwise pretty boring exercises🙌🏻
•

Ended up taking 5 sets to find the weight that worked well for the RDLs and lunges, settling on 50lb dumbbells for 10/side on the RDL and 5/side on the lunges🙌🏻
•
This combo will take care of your glutes, hammys and quads while also working your shoulders, grip and core similar to farmers walks👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Negative Chin-Ups alone are a great exercise but adding the band makes it so you still get to pull yourself up to the bar rather than just jumping👌🏻

Currently my favourite finisher for the core💥💥💥

The Off-Bench Oblique is a solid progression from the basic Side Plank and frees up your upper body so you can progress the exercise even further with added weight, pulses, etc.. 👌🏻 Be sure to stay tight, hook your feet under the bench and keep your torso perpendicular to the floor ☑️☑️☑️
•
Long Lever Planks will not only challenge the abdomen but they create a ton of tension in the lats and serratus (the muscles over your rib cage) when done properly - doing them on the bench allows you to really squeeze the bench and maximize the tension. Think about pulling your hands towards your toes and your toes towards your hands🔥🔥🔥
•
2-3 rounds should do the trick💪🏼

Currently my favourite finisher for the core • The Off-Bench Oblique is a solid progression from the basic Side Plank and frees up your upper body so you can progress the exercise even further with added weight, pulses, etc.. 🏻 Be sure to stay tight, hook your feet under the bench and keep your torso perpendicular to the floor ️ • Long Lever Planks will not only challenge the abdomen but they create a ton of tension in the lats and serratus (the muscles over your rib cage) when done properly - doing them on the bench allows you to really squeeze the bench and maximize the tension.
