In my opinion, the best strategy for weight training workouts when looking to lose body fat is sticking to compound lifts. Good examples are the bench press, squat and deadlift. Obviously there are lot of other ones but these are what we call the “Holy Trinity” or barbell exercises. They are great because they get a lot of muscle mass working at the same time which means more calories are burnt and more muscle is built over the long run. Good news if your trying to lean out! 🏋🏼‍♂️

To build muscle you have to cause the right amount of damage in the right place. Control is a major 🔑 to this. If your muscle can’t control the rep, it’s not doing as much work as it could be. A little momentum, especially towards the end of your set is fine. And taking time in your training to focus more on effort is important for overall development. But you always should start off with a good amount of control in each set. This makes sure the muscle fibers are being stressed and damaged where you want.

The reason that something works is because it limits the amount of calories that you are taking in. It really is that simple!

And before you ask, no you can't just eat smaller portions of junk and be healthy. If your eating in a caloric defect and it's all junk you might lose weight but you won't be healthy. Your body needs vitamins and minerals to produce the right amount of hormones for fat loss and to recover from workouts.

All that being said, we're all different. Keto for example may be what your body need to work optimally. You may lose weight eating more carbs. You have find the tactics that work for your lifestyle and your body. In my opinion, easiest mentally is tracking your macros. It gives you the flexibility to eat things that you want (in moderation) and make specific adjustments if progress slows. It takes commitment to get the hang of it but soon becomes habit. It's really high when everything is shiny and new but starts to go away once your realize just how much time and hard work goes into any great goal. I have struggled with this myself and wonder "If this is so important to me why am I not motivated all the time??"

I like to finish off arms with dumbbell curls. After my last set of 12 I like to "Run the Rack." I do a set to failure at each weight til I get to the 5lbs. With the 5s I do single arm curls with one arm contacting as hard as possible. I promise you will have the best pump of your life and your biceps will be on 🔥after!

My fitness goals for 2018:
1️⃣Focus on pushing my strength and get a 350lb squat and 400lb deadlift by the end of the year.
2️⃣Work on core strength and spine and hip mobility at least 3 times a week to get them working better.
3️⃣Put on some serious mass. Especially in my back, shoulders and arms. 
4️⃣Compete in a show in the fall.

Overhead pressing has its place, but I don't think it's as usefully if you are more concerned with building size. Would you agree?

Nothing sounds better this time of year than classic Christmas vinyl. This record player from @crosleyradio brings that nostalgic sound in a great looking and portable case. The best classic Christmas records were a little harder to find.😆
