#Ruralist: “Both dance and yoga have taught me that my body is deeply wise. I place equal value on the joys and challenges on my own path towards self discovery. Training to be a professional dancer was incredibly hard. It required strength, discipline and developing a flexible mind. Yoga teaches me how to fine tune my mind and body connection so I can understand and communicate the stories of my inner and outer world.” — @taramarieperri, founder @perriinstitute (interview @jillianschein 📷 @pbcrosby)

#EightList: @Stephanie_Charlene’s elegant, simple ceramic line, in a purist palette of whites, slates, and mud glazes, is made in the spirit of the enviable collection of stark stoneware her grandmother kept in the cabinets during childhood summers in a medieval village in the Grand Est region of France — ideal for a winter feast. #FreeRange: “I wonder if the kind folks who invited me to participate in the Essence of Zen Meditation retreat at the @wondharma Center in Claverack, NY knew what kind of incompatible zealot they were hosting. I’ve driven past the place a zillion times. Friends have attended weekly community services there, and recommend it highly for welcoming all denominations, as well as for its 426 acres of hiking trails, which are open to the public.” — @kschoemeraxe 📷 @themichaelmundy

#WillowemocCreek and its conjoined twin, #BeaverkillRiver, are the birthplace of American fly fishing. Appropriately then the @livingstonmanorflyfishingclub is located on a five acre lot right on the banks of the Willowemoc and is naturally a mecca for anglers. But even if you don’t own a pair of waders and a creel, club owners @thetomroberts, @mikaelarsson and @annaaabergs have something for you. Fly fishing has always been as much about immersing oneself in the beauty of nature as about pestering trout, and the Club’s true goal for its members is to encourage them to “explore, get inspired, make, relax, and connect with one another and their environment.” Our region is spectacularly beautiful, and the banks of a stream are a great place from which to contemplate that splendor. The club will be offering retreats through the winter, and membership opens in spring of 2018. — @eddiebrannan 📷 @pbcrosby

#UpAndComing: Described by Vogue as a “hub for alternative healing,” Brooklyn’s @MahaRoseNYC is the place to go in New York City for holistic healing sessions, workshops, and wellness training (as well as more esoteric treatments like crystal bowl sound baths and spiritual speed dating). Now they’ve added @MahaRoseNorth, a retreat center located in the Catskills, offering acupuncture, reiki, breathwork and private yoga sessions, as well as retreat stays in the property’s cabins. Hiking and swimming are also available for summer visitors, and for those planning to stay at this time of the year, the striking serenity of the Catskills in winter make the perfect recovery from and an antidote to the city’s stresses and strains. —@eddiebrannan

#Roadtrip: For dinner, my friend met me at @catskillpines, Jeremy Bernstein’s new venture on Route 212. Part bar, part restaurant, part café, the space serves many community-minded purposes. “The idea was always to have a kind of roadhouse,” Jeremy said. In addition to offering excellent “rustic, simple country food” for dinner, they also have locally roasted coffee and pastries made by their in-house pastry chef, Craig Thompson, and will soon be opening a few rooms upstairs as lodging to complete the roadhouse-style agenda. — words and photos @birdsandfishes

The concept for @mystic_lodge first manifested not long after Lisa Candela, a photographer, and her partner, Christopher Langford, met in South Dakota at a mutual friend’s wedding in the Black Hills, a wild-horse sanctuary and the traditional homeland of the Lakota Sioux tribe. “The Lakota had just finished their sundance and left their teepees out for the bride and groom,” she tells me. “This whole ceremony of love revolved around the teepees and encapsulated the circle of life. It was very romantic there, a lot like the Catskills.” Before long, Candela and Langford had created their own romantic tented hideaway here in Bovina. — @jillianschein 📷 @nicholasroutzen | style direction @johnpaultran | stylist @isewhite | beauty @andreahelgadottir

Each abode at @kateslazymeadow has its own color-saturated world of midcentury-modern decor and accoutrements. Some rooms are themed: owls; flying saucers; flamenco women. Other themes run throughout: artwork by students of the Byrdcliffe Colony, plucked from dusty abandoned portfolios in junk stores around Woodstock; horror flicks on VHS. Each suite has its own eclectic charm—and each is, in its own way, a perfect incarnation of @thekatepierson’s own brilliant, out-there, redhead style. — @hollowwalls 📷 @noahkalina

Things are clearly moving on at @theredrosemotel. The same can be said of @djb916. “I wanted something to hold on to. For me it’s been…” he pauses, not settling on whatever word best describes his recent journey. “Leaving everything behind in the city, moving to a town of 600, you have to adjust to planning your life differently. But I’m excited. I always say life happens. What are you gonna do? Just gotta roll with it.” — @eddiebrannan 📷 @mattjnovak

“[People] are stressed, tired, busy, have lower back pain, tight shoulders or a sore neck. The human body is really adaptable and designed with its own operating system and a sensory interface. Moving, eating well and communicating with nature and other humans is essential to keep it working. When the body isn’t getting what it needs, it sends signals in the form of stress or pain to alert us to imbalances due to screen time or sedentary lifestyles.” — @taramarieperri, founder @perriinstitute 📷 @pbcrosby | interview @jillianschein

#UpAndComing: @Magazzino, meaning warehouse in Italian, is a spectacular modern space devoted to Arte Povera, the politically radical art of late 1960s/early 1970s Italy. Designed by Spanish architect #MiguelQuismondo, the 18,000 square foot brutalist building in Cold Spring, NY was formerly a computer manufacturing facility. Magazzino shows select works from the Olnick Spanu Collection, most of which have never been exhibited in the United States, as well as rotating temporary exhibitions, community events, and collaborations with neighboring institutions. — @eddiebrannan 📷 #MarcoAnelli

#UpAndComing: With an emphasis on local ingredients and “clean eating,” @silviawoodstockny is the latest addition to Woodstock’s restaurant scene. Occupying an elegant grey-painted building with a large outside patio, the restaurant is stylish and designed with flair. Each zone inside boasts its own discrete aesthetic, including a dramatic open kitchen and a charming lounge with walls crowded with art. Sylvia’s distinctive interior design is unsurprising when you learn it was executed by #KaiKuhne. A former enfant-terrible designer and downtown scene fixture as part of the #AsFour fashion collective, Kühne relocated to the western Catskills in 2013. Here he launched with John Mollett @hasbeensandwillbees, an auction house focused on precisely the kind of quirky, unexpected style that makes Sylvia as interesting for its decor as for its menu. — @eddiebrannan | 📷 @teresahorgan42

“Nature is real here. This summer, there were forest fires that rained ash on the treehouse. In the winter, there’s snow on the ground. You’re certainly exposed to nature in a way that most people rarely are. But I think that’s good. It does set a tempo. Like being in upstate New York, I’m sure you have more of a natural equilibrium than if you lived in Manhattan or Brooklyn.” — @fosterhunting | interview @themichaelmundy | 📷 @dcroninphoto

@troutbeck.ny, which reopened this past August, is so much more than high-tech. It exudes the feeling of intimacy a family home has. People forget their cell phones and instead play Parcheesi in the library, or browse through the antique-book collection with many tomes coming from Troutbeck's original owners. There is a myriad of details that really make an impression here, like breakfast in bed, served on Scully & Scully trays with a newspaper pocket on the side, and the food stacked in tins like the ones used by wallahs in India. — by @doris_chevron 📷 @themichaelmundy

#Roadtrip: “I drove down the road for lunch at the esteemed @phoeniciadiner. Open every day during the summer months and five days a week during the winter, this well-preserved 1960s eatery is a hub for skiers, hikers, bikers, and locals alike—offering locally sourced comfort fare, a throwback fifties soundtrack, and a warm and casual atmosphere. The long counter lined with stools and booths is left over from the diner’s original days as a more traditional Greek spot with burgers and fries. Now the farm-oriented menu offers seasonal selections like a butternut-squash-and-polenta skillet, in addition to regular diner eats like the Reuben, pancakes, and B.L.T. In addition to its large dining room, there’s a vintage bar for waiting on the weekends when it’s packed, and during the summer there’s an Airstream out back that functions as a food truck, with more travel-friendly dining options you can take out to enjoy on the many nearby nature preserves and trails such as Mount Tremper Trail.” — words and photos @birdsandfishes

#FreeRange: “I showed up for the retreat on a soft, somber Friday afternoon in November, unprepared in almost every way. I’d been warned that the @wondharma serves only vegetarian food, so I fortified myself on the drive over with a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, as if the lingering aftertaste of pork would help me survive tofu and kimchi. From the time I checked in until 2:30 pm on Sunday, when I fled the place as if it were Alcatraz, I recorded pages and pages of wry zingers and cynical one-liners. 5:03 pm Friday:
I like the room: single bed done up in geometric-pattern bauhaus quilt, blonde-wood and white pressboard furniture, a sink with raised porcelain bowl, no wall art or flat screen TV. Can I do nothing all weekend without meditating? 9:52 pm Friday: My eye goes back and forth between an empty ceramic mug of tea on my desk and the black Columbia County night outside. It’s a four-minute walk in sub-freezing temperatures along an unlit wooden boardwalk to the dining hall, which closes in eight minutes. I could bundle up and hustle over there for a refill, but what good is 4 ounces of tea going to do me? Have these people heard the word venti?” — @kschoemeraxe 📷 @themichaelmundy

Candela’s @_motherofthemystic_ own nomadic lifestyle and fascination with indigenous cultures began in the mid-’90s, when she began undergoing past-life-regression therapy. Time spent soul-searching in Los Angeles brought her to astrology, tarot, and the fringe healing methods that have informed her unconventional point of view. It’s a sensibility that now permeates every aspect of @mystic_lodge. — by @jillianschein | 📷 @nicholasroutzen | style director @johnpaultran | stylist @isewhite | beauty @andreahelgadottir
