What the heck is turmeric
I have never heard of turmeric before living in San Francisco, maybe people just started using it recently. In India, turmeric has been a staple spice and herb for thousands of years. Science is now proving that turmeric does contain compounds with medicinal properties. The most important one is curcumin.
Here is some information from healthline.com
Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound “chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic, Western disease.” Curcumin in turmeric is helpful in preventing these diseases from coming. Curcumin helps the brain function there is something called “Brain-derived neutrophic factor” or BDNF, which is a growth hormone that functions in the brain. Some brain disorders, like depression and Alzheimer’s disease, are linked to decreased levels of BDNF. Turmeric essentially helps fight these brain disorders and can sometimes even reverse them. Increases Antioxidant Capacity “curcumin also boosts the activity of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.” This is huge for fighting oxidative damage, which leads to aging and many other diseases.
