Both of my great grandfathers worked the timber industry in south Mississippi clearing the vast longleaf pine forests. My maternal great grandfather floated his first raft of logs down the Pascagoula at age 13. I always feel a little connected to them and the rich heritage of the longleaf forests of old when I am able to snag some longleaf and open it up. This longleaf is at least 65 years old with lots of heartwood. You rarely see pine with this much heart anymore. I love being able to save trees from the chipper or dump, especially when they have this kind of character.
