Still haven’t decided what to do yet but just running is always a good option I think.  I will probably plan to run a couple of 5k’s this spring so will settle on a plan soon and then adjust my training. .

Just a nice 4 mile progression run this morning.  Started at 9:05 pace and ended at 8:34 increasing at each mile.  Very smooth which is always a good result!! Go Run Today!!

I Need A Plan!

I only ran 2 miles this morning because I simply don’t know what to do next. I’ve beaten back the IT Band Monster for the time being and with consistent work will keep it at bay.  I’ve tested my legs to 4 miles and I’ve worked a little speed. Ok now what?

Time to plan. With a plan I have paces and distances to motivate me and it keeps me from doing too much as well.  The question is what to plan for?  Well let’s be honest. Gotta prove I can stay healthy so how about a 5k?  Time to do some research!

Smooth 5K to Start My Week! 😁

You know after a fitful night of sleep (or lack of sleep) it’s hard to drag yourself out of bed at 4:20am.  Just want to shut the alarm off and lay back down. Except I haven’t slept anyway so might as well run!

So I crawled out and ran a nice even paced 5k to get my day started.  It’s quite possible that I will be in bed right after dinner tonight though 😂

I’ve always kept this blog pretty real. Good, bad & ugly.  So let’s talk a bit about doing the things we need to do as we age.  The account is called @oldjamesrunning for a reason. I’m not as young as I once was and I want to be running for a lot more years.  So as I’m over 50 now one of those things we need to do is have a colonoscopy. .
.
It’s vitally important to catch anything wrong early and get it taken care of now.  Today was my day!  Removed 3 small polyps and won’t have to go back for 5 to 10 years depending on the results.  DON’T LET ANYONE KEEP YOU FROM DOING IT!  Yes the prep day sucks but the procedures now are as easy as a quick nap.  The benefits?  Being able to keep enjoying life!

So are you do for get a checkup?  Physical? Colonoscopy or Mamogram?  Do yourself and your loved ones a favor.  Get it done today. .

OK maybe a little bit more. 😁  I’ve been under the weather for the last couple of days and just didn’t feel like running.  But today I decided that however I felt it was going to be a run day!  And so I ran. No real issues, just cruised for 5k.  Strength & stretching tomorrow then another run on Friday. .

What A Relief! .

Went to the Overland Park Boat Show yesterday and while walking around my IT Band was hurting!  UGH!  I have no idea why it would act up just walking when it’s been good for a few runs now?

So this morning I was more than a little apprehensive to run. Wanted to go outside but we have a freezing drizzle advisory (turned out to be nothing) so decided to just run on the mill. Also the mill gives me a bit more pace control. Started out at a slow 10 min mile pace and to my astonishment no issues. So I ran a progression run that ended at 8:34 pace and no IT issues.  Did have a little twinge down the top outside of my calf which can be associated with the IT, we will see. Fingers Crossed!

The Struggle Was Real This Morning!

Run Farther? No. Run Faster? No. Run Smarter? YES!

I think it’s the tendency of most runners returning from injury to increase the load when things start to improve and I’m no different.  But I’m trying to be smart about this and not screw it up!  So today I followed up the successful 3.1 with a successful and pain free 2.5 miles this morning. That’s 4 pain free runs in a row now and it feels pretty good! 😁

Forward Not Back!  Had to run on New Years Day Right?! Well -8 deg with a windchill of -22 deg says treadmill!  Just cruised at my normal pace and zoned out then started to think about resolutions. 🤔

This year saw me launch myself back towards a healthier me. I lost weight, returned to running and joined Instagram where I found tons of inspiration!  You all simply ROCK!!! And yet there was more!

I got to run a a 1/2 Marathon with my cousin @burkeruns and have never had more fun in a race!  And launched myself into my next goal of a fast 1/2 marathon. During that training I ran far and I ran fast and then the wheels fell off ☹️. Time to regroup and get stronger. Which brings me to current day broken but much stronger and still motivated!

Almost scared to say it but this is the 3rd run in a row that the IT Band has not protested at all!  Maybe some light at the end of the tunnel?? I will keep doing the stretching and strengthening exercises to hopefully keep things in line. .

No outside run this morning as we are in a wind chill warning with wind chills currently at -8 deg Fahrenheit and supposed to get worse.  UGH!  Time for Spring!!

I’m almost afraid to say it but that’s 2 runs in a row with no IT Band issues!  Now granted it’s only a slow 2 miler but hey that’s a lot considering how things have been going lately!  I will take it and continue on. Maybe 3 miles this weekend?

The hardest part of the last few days is getting out of bed to just do my stretching & strengthening routine. It’s just not as fun as running ☹️. But without it I can’t run so it will continue!  Doesn’t mean I won’t grumble about it 😁!

IT Band has been iffy even walking around for the last few days so I wasn’t expecting much this morning. Surprise!  2 miles relatively pain free!  I will take it! .

It’s a good time of the year to be injured if your sister in law is home for the holidays and she’s an athletic trainer!  She adjusted how I am doing some of the exercises and confirmed that I’m doing the right stuff to fix the IT Band.  That just bolsters my resolve.  I’m in this for the long haul so I’m going to win, someday. 😁

YES!  Since I upped the run Wednesday from 2 to 3.1 I figured the smart thing was to drop back a bit today.  Just cruised through 2 miles with only slight issues.  The IT Band didn’t hurt but I could “feel” it a bit. We will see how the day progresses!!
