Though I’ve only been vegan since June, the ethical treatment of animals is something I’ve been aware of since I was probably nine years old. Lisa Simpson was the first vegetarian I’d ever heard of and although she’s a fictional character, she represents the awareness of real issues. I had a 3-week period in high school where I went vegetarian after watching Meet Your Meat. If you’ve seen it, it’s a very radical look at the meat and dairy industry and how the animals are treated. I don’t necessarily agree with that tactic, but it obviously did make some sort of impact on me. As I got older, I had more and more angry friends. Angry at being teenagers, angry at the government, angry about social issues. I found my own place with all these different friend groups and what they stood for and I became more and more aware of certain things. Fast-forward to my adulthood, I find myself being a lot less angry, and even more so compassionate and tender-hearted. Some of the most important people in my life live a vegan and/or cruelty-free lifestyle and it’s no coincidence I gravitate more towards them - I simply want good-hearted people in my life. Happy #WorldVeganDay to the people that have inspired me or had any sort of helping hand in my lifelong vegan cruelty-free journey.
