“You see things; and say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and say ‘Why Not?’” -George Bernard Shaw

By the time Brandon entered 6th grade @motthallbridges he was labeled a “troubled kid” with special needs. Bigger than most scholars his size, he had a quiet temper that could be explosive when provoked. Misguided and misunderstood, he joined a gang at very young age and was suspended from the time he was in third grade, which I found out after he had a physical altercation with one of his peers in our school. On paper Brandon fit the description of what many would label a future criminal. But I refused to believe that or give up on him; he was required to stay every day after school with me. Even though he was banned from most activities until his behavior improved, we talked about his future, personal challenges, and had honest conversations about how society would view him as a threat because of his past that would land him in jail or dead. For three years, Brandon had a safe space to stay, which kept him off the street and less active in the gang. On my toughest days, he like so many scholars picked me up when I was down. Now I am proud to share that he is graduating high school and going to study business at the University of Bridgeport in August 2018!!!!! 👨🏾‍🎓🙌🏾 Here’s what every adult should know, children know who believe in them and those who do not. Learn to: listen, build relationships, and nurture them to BE GREAT! 👑 [🎥👈🏾 ]
Thank you Brandon for trusting me and proving that no one should ever question my “Why Not?” 💜#theLopezEffect #OccupySchools #BlackBoyJoy #BrownsvilleBrilliance #BetterMakeRoom #CollegeBound #ReachHigher #SpecialEducation #Teacher #Education

It was great presenting to Nadia Lopez and Mott Hall’s teaching staff. Teachers provided us with positive feedback on YouthLeap’s smartwatches, which affirms that we are on the right track! We look forward to our partnership with Mott Hall Bridges Academy. Our students deserve the BEST!

All I could do is give myself permission to take a minute and close my eyes 😴. Throughout my career I have been stretched beyond my limits, but these past 24 hours have truly defined the term “March Madness”. Mental health is IMPORTANT and NECESSARY! Our children are in crisis and fighting systems filled with people who don’t listen, don’t get it, and don’t want to be responsible is exhausting. This is between serving as an advocate for my parents to demand adequate mental health services and having to be relentless in holding folks accountable because they would rather wait for something detrimental to happen, before they take me take seriously😡 Imagine, people doubting what I have to say, as if I were new to my job🤨Everyday I add another position to my title as Principal, not because I want to, but I have to 😞 #theLopezEffect #OccupySchools #mentalhealth

When Steven Laxton reached out, he said he was working on a book of photographs capturing interesting people. To be honest I didn’t really know the direction, but loved the vision. He spent a few hours at the school and we talked about what it has taken to Build a Bridge to Brilliance despite the ill-effects of vioence and poverty. That was last minute year This is the first time I had the chance to see the photo and I must say it is truly captivating. THANK YOU 📸@steven_laxton!!!!!

On a day we are all thinking about our kids and school safety, this inspiring school principal from Brownsville Brooklyn comes to mind. Nadia Lopez opened Mott Hall Bridges Academy school in 2010. Originally trained as a nurse Lopez brought her strong-willed compassion to Brownsville to be a school principal. In early 2015, Brandon Stanton (the photographer with Humans of New York) photographed a student of hers who said she was his biggest inspiration. When people from around the world discovered the dire need of this safe space in Brownsville (an area considered the riskiest in Brooklyn for children to grow up in, due to it's high crime and poverty rates) they donated $1.2 million. Two years later, Lopez has worked with the likes of Michelle Obama, Jada Pinkett Smith, and even has a viral TED Talk. Still, when one is with her, she’s just an amazing principal who sees her students as her kin.

The movie Black Panther has made nearly a billion dollars at the box office based on an idea of a fictitious technologically advanced world that is predominately Black. But I beg to differ [swipe👈🏾]. Wakanda is all around us and if we take our time, we will see that the very inspirational characters that we’ve longed to see, exist in our very communities. It’s time that we teach our children of the lineage they come from and raise them to become the next generation of Kings and Queens, who continue a legacy of excellence. Let’s introduce them to the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math so their natural born curiosity unleashes their creativity and innovation to develop new ideas.
Kudos to all of the actors, actresses, and director who inspired hope in a time when we need it the most. When we showed up to the box office we proved our spending power, as a result, Hollywood will gross multi-millions dollars of profit that may never yield a return of investment into our community. Instead of waiting for the sequel, we must build as a collective to invest and create our own: schools, production companies, publications, media outlets, tech companies, labs, galleries, grocery stores, etc. WE NEED TO BE THE PRODUCERS (EARNERS), NOT JUST THE CONSUMERS (SPENDERS). We are our own tribe and WE CAN create the world we pay to see! 💜 #theLopezEffect #OccupySchools #Education #WakandaForever #WCW #BlackExcellence #STEM #STEAM #BlackGirlMagic #leadership #Teachers
