CARFE (CARNIVORE CAFE)
Another dinorama project for school.
This year, he had to pick a specific dinosaur. He picked the Carnotaurus. The Carnotaurus is a carnivore and was discovered in Argentina. As we were brainstorming the diorama, the boy said the word "Carfe" for no specific reason. We laughed about it and then I suggested a restaurant scene for his project. He thought it was a funny idea.
If you don't know this about me, I'm slightly a hoarder. Fortunately, an organized hoarder, so all the materials involved in this piece, I happen to have around.
The map is a beat up old world map that I was planning to use as gift wrap, the astroturf is from a place I lived in, back in 2006, the table cloth and bib napkin was cut out of a handkerchief from my wedding - I bought a pack of 4 for the wedding and the pork belly plate is a magnet I got in S. Korea in 2004.
We made the table out of a baby food jar, so the magnet just stuck itself on top. The steaks and chef hat are made of out of sculpting clay, the trees are cut from random bushes and plant-life from our yard. The carfe signs are written on some dry plant leaves that fell off our front tree and the dinosaurs are toys, the boy already had. The only thing we purchased are the cutout letters because I got lazy and didn't want to hand cut them, which I did for his previous dinorama project (see past post)— although, I do like the imperfect quality of handcut letters more than the way this looks.
When we were done, I had 3 immediate thoughts:
1. I was really proud of the boy for taking a leap and making something a little humorous for his project.
2. I felt like his production assistant, as he directed me to make his vision come together.
3. This was no joke, it took a lot more time to do than it looks like it should (have taken). I can't imagine what elementary school is going to be like.
