Four years ago, mere days after Mike Brown was killed in #Ferguson , tensions were running so high, l asked if there was a way for us to create a space for #community and #police to have a dialogue. The chief of police in the town l lived, called me, and with the help and support of some amazing people in the community, the first of many healing forums began around the country.
It all started with one tiny ask.
I lead that session and it was the FIRST time, many of those people learned about my work and watched me facilitate anything of this nature, even as l had been quietly doing it for years... Those officers, tepid in the beginning, warmed up and began to listen and shared, what would keep the young people and them safe, especially around one of their own who was out of line. I knew then, we created history in our town that night, but four years later, it has truly sunken in.. When we do things from a pure authentic place, it may take a while but amazing things will happen.. We can't fix folks that are set in their ways about people of color, but we can build allies around, and with them, for protection from Some of the vitriol they experience daily. Our roles, are to keep excellence as the standard in our families, and teach our young their history so there is pride in everything they touch, while standing up for what is their right to live and be.
