Wow we love this Catch up on @donalskehan and his European food tour in his latest blog post from Sweden. Don't forget to tune-in for an all new double-bill of #FollowDonal tonight from 9pm! I’ve just touched down in Stockholm but before I start my food journey I want to explore the 57 canals that surround the 14 islands of Sweden’s stunningly beautiful capital city. As I carve through the waters on a speedboat, I feel like James Bond!
I’ve certainly worked up an appetite and my first stop is bound to satisfy it – the Ostermalms Saluhall is a gigantic market full of delis and cafes, a veritable smorgasbord of smorgasbords! You can get everything which is wonderfully Swedish here, from moose salami to lingonberry jam. I’m off to Lisa Elmqvists, a family run deli running since 1926 to meet Nina, who presents me with a humungous seafood platter which tastes absolutely incredible.
From the market I head to Oktagon which is one of the city’s coolest spots to hang out and eat Fika. Fika is a Swedish institution, a mid morning tradition where workers down tools and eat cake. I think I may apply for a job in Stockholm! My guide Lisa is waiting for me and we gorge ourselves on pastries and coffee. Then Lisa hits me with a bombshell… the Swedes also have Fika during the afternoons! I need to move here… Now!
Full of sugar it’s time to head out into the countryside, the Swedes love a good forage, hopefully I can burn off some calories picking mushrooms with Birgitta, a woman who’s been studying fungi since she was knee high to a toadstool. We go for a walk through the forest and she sniffs out some chanterelle mushrooms. Birgitta sets up a camp fire and cooks them in butter and garlic and we scoff them down with bread and berries - it doesn’t get much more Swedish than this! #blog #food #foodblogger #Sweden #Stockholm
