#lategram #latepost 19 years ago, I attended a summer youth camp that would change my life forever: the #GlobalYoungLeadersConference . The #GYLC1999 was the inaugural conference, and, until now, high school students from all over the world are given the opportunity to interact with their peers, discuss world issues, and appreciate the world as a global village.
It was my first time in Washington DC and New York City. From June 28 to July 8, 1999, I got to interact with 394 international students , a number of I still maintain contact until now, thanks to social media, and some of which I was able to visit after the conference (like Daniel in Germany and France, Rigo and Kyle in the US, and Caroline in Sweden). Those 12 days were probably one of the best times in my life so far. I also have a claim to fame, being the 1st Filipino to represent, not only my alma mater Miriam College, but, more importantly, the Philippines in this prestigious conference. Apart from former Miriam president and CHED chair Patricia Licuanan and then Associate Dean for Student Affairs Aurora Buncio who nominated me to attend GYLC, I owe this experience to my late Mommy, who sacrificed a lot, including selling her property inheritance in the province, to raise the funds for me to be able to fly the US; one of the many reasons why I sacrificed for her, too.
Mommy, thank you for allowing me to join GYLC despite the hefty price tag. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to widen my horizons. I am forever indebted.
To my GYLC friends , specially to the France group, happy 19th to us! Thanks for the friendship. Viva les french fries!
