The amazing ladies at @waexpo will be showing our film today at The Heritage of Women in Exploration conference at the @rgs_ibg.
Super gutted I can’t be there, especially to hear fashion historian @katestrasdin present the achievements of early female explorers and debunk the myths around impractical dress. I think we would have a lot to talk about Kate...!
Still some tickets available for tonight, just head over to their website💪

‪Last 2 days to catch the @heritagelotteryfund supported Rebellious Sounds Archive in #Chippenham - the booth comes down tomorrow afternoon. Find it in the Town Hall - and while you’re there, why not chat to a town councillor about what matters to you in Chippenham? ‬

Alright! I can't resist spilling some research beans. This was Dr Anna Tjomsland's passport photo when she went to France with Base Hospital no.1 in early 1918. I'm still trying to work out her War service record because, being a woman, the army wouldn't commission her into the Medical Corps as a full officer and spent about two years bouncing her around. She seems to have joined the Army in 1917 to do secretarial work for BH1, which was formed by Bellevue Hospital where she was a resident surgeon. Let me be clear: the Army WOULD NOT commission a skilled surgeon to treat battle wounded, because she was a woman, despite a critical shortage of medical personnel. I'm still unclear on the particulars, but Dr Tjomsland did practice medicine with the Army in France and supervised her own ward at BH1, but all the while under short term contracts. She was honorably discharged in 1919 and then performed relief work with the American Red Cross. For more, come find me at a WW1 living history event or wait for my paper to be published. Or take advantage of my weakness and harangue me here.

Wasn't it polka dots?! Yes. AND. No.😉💋💪 You could make yourself DIZZY trying to research this (and believe me we have 😁 )
In reality women used what was available to cover their hair while working for safety reasons but for Women Ordnance Workers, otherwise known as WOW’s - the pattern on the official WOW kerchief material is not polka dots, but is based on the symbol of the exploding cannon ball that is part of the logo for the U. S. Ordnance Department. Offered during the war in both original red on white AND the iconic white on red.

It is these that our WOW bandanas are fashioned after.

In 1977 NASA began looking for women astronauts. Seeing an ad in the paper, then student Sally Ride decided to apply for the job. Fast-forward to 1983 when Sally became the first American woman to travel to space as a mission specialist on the STS-7 space shuttle mission.
.
In 1987, Sally retired from NASA and began teaching at the University of California. Always looking for new ways to encourage women and girls to study science and mathematics, Sally wrote science books for children and teachers and stayed involved with science programs and festivals around the United States. Sally was indicted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This quote from Sister Joan Chittister reflects our value of hospitality that we recognize that positive connections are how we accomplish our work and that a spirit of hospitality is how we come alongside each other.
We also hold this value in light of the recent zero tolerance policy to separate families at the border. We value hospitality by walking along side moms and their children to create strong families and therefore value policies that protect other mothers and their children. While the policy was just reversed, there is still a lot of work to do to keep the children safe.
Stay tuned on Friday for how you can partner with us to support the efforts by @theyoungcenter, an advocacy group and legal defense fund working to protect immigrant children and end family separation.

"Every single time I cross over or walk under the Brooklyn Bridge, which after 135 years since its completion still stands as strong and as majestically as ever, I think about Emily Warren Roebling (1843–1903), a woman who never expected to oversee the completion of what remains one of the greatest engineering triumphs in history, but who fearlessly rose to the challenge when called to face it. If you don’t know her you should... go to our site womenyoushouldknow.net (link in bio) and search her name. Her story is worth a read!" - Jen Jones, co-founder WYSK - 📷: yours truly

Lillian Ascough of Detroit, Mich., served as the Connecticut State Chairman of the National Womens Party. She studied for the concert stage in London and Paris. But she abandoned the concert stage to devote time to suffrage. She was sentenced to fifteen days in jail in August of 1918, following a Lafayette Square demonstration, and sentenced to five days in February of 1919, following a watchfire demonstration. http://suffragistmemorial.org/lillian-ascough/ #womenshistory #suffragist #wonderwomen

“We will not have failure - only success and new learning.” - Queen Victoria
. . .
Alexandrina Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 to her death in 1901. She was crowned #onthisday in 1837.
. . .
Victoria inherited the British throne at the age of 18. Although the UK was an established constitutional monarchy, in which the sovereign held little direct political power, Victoria privately enforced her own influence on government policy and ministerial appointments. Although she wasn’t supportive of women’s suffrage, she was clearly politically active herself. Victoria married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840. Their 9 children married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the sobriquet "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert’s death in 1861, Victoria became increasingly secluded and maintained a deep mourning for the rest of her life. Publicly, however, Victoria remained a national icon closely identified with strict standards of personal morality. Her reign of 63 years and 7 months was longer than that of any of her predecessors and is widely known as the Victorian era. This was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. Although Victoria never went to India, she was also given the title Empress of India from 1876, when control of the territory was handed from the East India Company to the Crown.

Fascinated by Mrs Eliza Tracey; a popular and amusing orator on the Esplanade. She’s pictured here in 1903. “The clock struck three, and a sense of disappointment pervaded the atmosphere. Presently a shout of “Here she is!” directed all eyes to a squat little figure bearing down on the centre of the arena…” Western Mail; 18 April 1903; Page 37.

Just finished this brilliant book by Lucinda Hawksley which tells the story of the women's movement in Britain. I think this is one of the best women's history books I have read recently, she seems to go into more detail than 'Deeds not Words' by Helen Pankhurst. Hawksley starts at the point when Mary Wollstonecraft's 'A Vindication of the Rights of Women' was published up to women achieving the vote 100 years ago in 1928 and talks about the issues women have faced as well as the main characters in the fight for suffrage. She seems to move away from the Pankhursts in a rose tinted light, which many accounts present, instead giving a more real and often flawed account the suffragettes and WSPU alongside the suffragists NUWSS. Its a really interesting read, I would highly recommend you read it. Another great book from @bolton_library_museum .

Elisabeth Marbury was one of the world’s leading, and pioneering female, theatrical agents and producers (among her roster of clients was Oscar Wilde). She first met Elsie de Wolfe in 1887 and the two became a Victorian lesbian "power couple," their relationship enduring nearly 40 years. ⠀
-⠀
Marbury (born on this day in 1856) and de Wolfe lived together at 122 East 17th Street, near Union Square, beginning in 1892. In 1897 and 1898, de Wolfe began to redecorate and simplify the interiors of No. 122, gaining experience and publicity that enabled her to launch her career as an interior decorator in 1905 -- she is now often credited as America’s first professional interior designer.⠀
-⠀
The couple hosted Sunday salons at there home which became well known for hosting many celebrities connected with the arts, society, and politics.⠀

After receiving her master's degree in mathematics in 1957 from NYU Edith began work in senior technical and management positions at IBM in 1958 where she worked for 16 years. She achieved the highest level technical position at IBM, Senior Systems Programmer in 1968. She left IBM in 1975 and became the founding president of PC classics, a consulting firm specializing in software development projects.
She began dating Thea Spyer, an Amsterdam-born psychologist, in 1965 and became engaged in 1967 although it was not yet legal in the United States. They were finally able to enter a domestic partnership in 1993. They married in 2007 in Toronto, as NY had not yet legalized same-sex marriage, after Thea was given less than a year to live. After Thea passed away in 2009 Edith was required to pay $363,053 in federal estate taxes on her inheritance of her wife's estate because federal law did not recognize the validity of their marriage. She was barred from claiming exemption for surviving spouses by Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act which said that the term "spouse" only applied to marriages between a man and woman. She filed a lawsuit in 2010 against the federal government, seeking a refund because DOMA singled out legally married same-sex couples for "differential treatment compared to other similarly situated couples without justification”. Judge Jones ruled that Section 3 of DOMA was unconstitutional under the due process guarantees of the Fifth Amendment in 2012. Edith received her refund including interest. In 2013 the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that Section 3 of DOMA was unconstitutional.

Edith volunteered for the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, the East End Gay Organization, the LGBT Community Center, 1994 Gay Games New York, and helped found Old Queers Acting Up, an improv group utilizing skits to address social justice issues. She served on the board of Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) from 1986 to 1988 and again from 2005 to 2007. - Jo

Can you guess what unusal material this 1940s wedding dress is made from? On her wedding day, Margaret Leola Egan wore a dress made from a silk parachute. She attained this material through her brother, Walter “Bud” Egan, after he returned home from the war. Margaret collaborated with a dressmaker and sewn the parachute with a silk thread. The dress featured lace, silk-covered buttons, as well as hand sewn button, loops, and detailing. A taffeta slip was also added to avoid exposure when the wind blew the lightweight dress up. On her wedding day, Egan wore a cotton gauze veil and a headpiece decorated with lace, gauze, and small pearl beads. During wartime, weddings often happened quickly and without notice due to the groom being shipped off on a whim. This left little time to get a special dress for the wedding. Dresses during this era were simple and often short in order for the bride to be capable of riding a bike to church or city hall for their wedding.

Celebrating Juneteenth and Harriet Tubman’s freedom winning work... #Repost @womenshistory with @get_repost
・・・
Today is Juneteenth, a day most commonly recognized as a celebration of the emancipation of slavery. More specifically, it is also the celebration of the liberation of the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. At that point, slavery was illegal in Texas due to the Emancipation Proclamation (which was enacted on January 1st, 1863)—so all those who remained enslaved following that date were illegally held. On this day in 1865, they were finally liberated.

Women played great roles in the long road to freedom from slavery. Today, learn more about Harriet Tubman, who helped enslaved people gain freedom via the Underground Railroad, among many other accomplishments, in our online exhibit at 👉womenshistory.org 👈

When Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to go into space in 1963, started off towards the sky, by some sources, she is believed to have said: “Hello, sky, it’s time to take off your hat.” She also cheered up a fellow cosmonaut Valeriy Bykovsky who was launched two days earlier, by singing a popular song. Valentina Tereshkova spent almost three days in space and orbited Earth 48 times in her space capsule, Vostok 6. #otd 16 June
👩🏿‍🚀👩‍🚀👩🏻‍🚀
.
«Эй, небо, сними шляпу!» стала крылатой фразой, которую приписывают Валентине Терешковой, первой и по сей день, единственной женщине-космонавту, которая побывала в космосе в одиночку. Валентина Терешкова подбодрила во время миссии космонавта Валерия Быковского песней про Весёлый Ветер. 16 июня исполнилось 55 лет с момента исторического полёта. 👩🏿‍🚀👩‍🚀👩🏻‍🚀

“When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?” —Eleanor Roosevelt, 1946

On June 18th 1948—70 years ago today!—the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which was chaired by Mrs. Roosevelt, adopted its Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This historic plaque notes where Mrs. Roosevelt lived while chairing that committee. Discover it when you take our Gay Village Walking Tour [https://walkaboutny.com/the-tours/gay-themed-tours/gay-village-walking-tour/]. Where else did she live in Greenwich Village? We've got TWO weeks left and about $3,000 left to raise to make the Girl Powered Planner a reality. .
.
There is a certain joy in reading about an amazing woman that stood up for her rights and made change, like “Hell yeah you did, girl!” It's unfair that so many students (and adults!) don't get to hear these stories. The more “into” history you get, the more you learn just how many girls and women really did history-making things. Girls’ history is American history and I wanted to showcase that. .
.
Learn about historical changemakers while you plot your own goals and dreams. The Girl Powered Planner offers an introduction to some really fascinating historical and contemporary figures, and I hope it inspires girls and women to see that it is possible to be a young woman and make a difference.

Wow!
