La victoire! Les Bleus (@equipedefrance ) have won the @fifaworldcup ! And with that, the winner of our #WorldCupOfWildlife is of course #France ’s iconic Gallic Rooster. But, wait a second 🤔 A rooster isn’t #wildlife . Ok so, the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), was first domesticated 5,000 years ago in Asia and with a total global population of nearly 20 billion, there are more chickens in the world than any other bird. Chickens are nowhere near extinction; however, they are a factor in the extinction of countless other species. How? Well, Factory Farming. .
We’re all too familiar with the horrific animal welfare issues from factory farming, but the slaughter of chickens and other livestock is equally bad for Earth’s biodiversity. One study argues that meat consumption is the single biggest threat to much of the world’s flora and fauna. The prime reason - habitat loss. Biodiverse habitats are being converted to house livestock or grow crops to feed these animals. And habitat destruction will only get worse as the global demand for meat increases. By 2050, 741 million acres of land in areas of high biodiversity are expected to shift to agriculture. This massive habitat loss coupled with other harmful effects of factory farming, such as water pollution, is the leading cause behind Earth’s current 6th #MassExtinction .
As one researcher put it bluntly, “You eat a steak, you kill a lemur in Madagascar. You eat a chicken, you kill an Amazonian parrot.”
#ConservationGoals must be scored to mitigate this catastrophic threat upon our world’s species. Simply, we must all eat less meat, and that might be hard to swallow. .
Industries must also change livestock practices. France itself is a new leader in ecological agriculture, recently passing #green measures to promote economically efficient and sustainable agriculture. Despite progress, the challenge remains. We need to find solutions to feed the world’s growing population while simultaneously protecting our remaining natural habitats. So, as we celebrate France and the Gallic Rooster’s #WorldCup victory, consider admiring the chicken instead of eating it. After all, it could save a lemur or a parrot. - 5 hours ago
