Photos by Omnia Arfin @omniaarfin , member of the African Photojournalism Database (APJD), sharing her project ‘The monastery of St. Simeon Kharraz’, documenting the hundreds of thousands of Christians in Egypt who gathered to join in the prayers for Egypt in December 2012.
The monastery of St. Simeon Kharraz’ was erected and dedicated to him and the legend of his moving the Mokattam Mountain, more than a thousand years after his death. The monastery in Cairo contains seven Churches and Chapels hidden in a series of caves in the Mokattam (Muqattam) hills, and has become a Coptic pilgrimage site.
“In response to a call from Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria, and the Patriarch of Diocese of St Mark the Evangelist, many Egyptians prayed for the safety of Egypt, especially in those difficult days. The prayers came to be a message to all that there is no one party or group, but that we’re all Egyptian. There can be no democracy without participating in all sectors, or without giving and service. Prayers were raised to reconcile all leaders to serve our homeland.”
