Thank you so much to @lonelyplanet for this weekend’s Mongolia #lpinstatakeover and welcome to all new friends who are joining me on this journey. If you loved my Mongolia series, please note that this October you can travel to this wondrous country with me - details in bio.
• Over the next few posts, I'll share a bit of my story with you and I would like to know yours - leave me a comment below and let’s get to know each other.
• I was born into a Russian family in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which at the time was part of Soviet Union. Even though our family relocated all the way west across the Eurasian plains to Estonia when I was three years old, my earliest memory is of the mountains of Almaty, an incredibly beautiful city. Throughout my childhood, I would come back to Almaty every summer and my love of travel was born somewhere in between the long train rides across the Kazakh steppe.
• I remember feeling that I was somehow always a stranger - and simultaneously at home - wherever I went in the world. I was a foreigner growing up in Estonia, and for my Kazakhstan friends I was ‘the Baltic girl'. That feeling has accompanied me when I came to the States at the age of 16 and stayed with me throughout my life.
• What about you - where are you from and what is your earliest travel memory? #almaty #insearchofperfect - 13 hours ago
