A well known western OBE theory is that consciousness somehow leaves the body but do they think the same thing in Tibetan Buddhism where it's been practised for 100s of years? During an interview author Rob Nairn, he was asked ‘is consciousness dependant on having a body?
He replied: ‘definitely not, consciousness exists independently of the body and is a more extensive and permanent state then the body. So the way you would look at it is the body is a vehicle which is employed by consciousness. So the continued existence of the body depends upon the presence of consciousness’. (Nairn R, 2017). ____________________________
This conveys that consciousness inhabits the body rather then being produced by it. Wallace (2012) suggests you are not just working with the substrate consciousness ‘which is intangible and immaterial’, you are using the power of your samadhi to create an ‘ethereal body composed of energy’. The substrate consciousness is ‘the space of the mind itself’ (Wallace A, 2011) and the Samadhi is meditation (Ray R, 2001).
Wangyal (1998) states ‘all experience, waking and dreaming has an energetic basis’ which is called is ‘Lung’ in Tibetan or ‘Prana' in Sanskrit. It seems that this, in tandem with the samadhi is what the energy body is synthesised from. Wallace (2012) says one can create this energy body whilst meditating within the dream state and project it, ‘send it out into the intersubjective world, into ordinary reality’. ___________________________
He states 'this is truly an out of body experience, and what you send out is not some immaterial ghostly emanation, nor is it the intuitional power of clairvoyance. Rather, you are actually projecting something physical that is imbued with your awareness and that is localised (in the sense of something being here versus there’ (Wallace A, 2012).
This energy body is referred to by the Dalai Lama as the ‘special dream body’ that is created from the mind and vital energy (known in sanskrit as prana), and can disassociate entirely from the gross physical body and travel - 3 months ago
