The Underdog (Lee Chun-baek and Oh Sung-yoon, 2018)
The opening film for #BIFAN 2018. It was super interesting to watch a Korean animation film about dogs, to say the least. I enjoyed the different layers of the artwork and the representation of animal rights issues throughout. However, the film’s portrayal of diverse social issues was also its downfall: some ideas felt alluded to and not fully developed, which gave the film a sense of loose ends and an unclear message overall.
It’s supposedly a film about a dog that gets abandoned and meets other dogs, but it’s also about different types of dogs and different types of people in relation to these dogs. So much happens, but at the end of the day.. we’re left unsure about who this protagonist is, and what exactly he wants in life. In summary, perhaps there’s too much plot development and not enough of the characters? Almost the exact inversion of (what I felt was) the issue with ‘Isle of Dogs’… haha. - 10 hours ago
