We came, we saw, we ate tons of tacos (🏾pollo al pastor 🏾)... and experienced 3 earthquakes 🇲🇽
The earthquakes weren't not on my Mexico City "See & Do List". In fact we postponed our original trip last September due to whatelse? An earthquake. •
The first 2 earthquakes happened on Friday evening. We were getting ready for dinner when the hotel security guard knocked on our door. Due to the fact that I basically know no Spanish at all, I thought he was asking for the hairdryer back. He was in fact telling to get out of the building NOW! We ran out into the park. (FYI I now know the Spanish word for earthquake, it's terremoto)
By earthquake #2 a couple hours later I was feeling like an old pro...ok, no I wasn't. A big hug, kiss & thank you to Jackie who lead me through a tapping exercise to calm my nerves... a mezcal mojito (no sugar) also helped.
It may sound weird to some (it did to my BF & my mom) that we decided stay. We actually didn't even discuss it. I somehow felt l safe, like I knew we were going to be OK.
Fast forward to earthquake #3 at 1am on Monday morning, at that point I was thinking "Why the hell did we stay here???". We were sleeping when we began to hear horns & sirens in the distance, as well as knocking on doors and loud voices in the hallway of the hotel. The tell tale sign of the earthquake was our swinging ceiling light (plus the nauseating swaying of the building). This was the smallest of the earthquakes 5.9 vs 7.7on Friday night. That was the last of the earthquakes for us, it made for a tough sleep but we were thankful the damage was limited & people was safe.
On a trip that was pretty much bookended by earthquakes we made the most of our time, touring the city on bike & eating yummy tacos, wandering through La Condesa, the historic city centre , Coyocan and the museo de Frida Kahlo. •
