Aisling Walsh - Maudie (2016)
This was a really sweet, touching film about Canadian folk painter Maud Lewis and her life. A small intimate portrayal of the artist and her home life, this film lives on the acting of the amazing Sally Hawkins as the title character and the also amazing Ethan Hawke as her husband Everett Lewis.
It's the story of a couple of complete outsiders, not outsiders because they were too cool for school, but because they are both socially awkward and in the case of Maud at least, suffering from a debilitating motor illness. They also live in Nova Scotia which doesn't really help with the whole isolation thing. The cinematography is beautiful (although it is filmed in Newfoundland not Nova Scotia) and adds to the starkness of the lives, which even so, have their own beauty. And that is what the movie is about, and what Maud Lewis was about as well, finding beauty in the ordinary, in the world around her. Beautiful from start to finish. (5/5)
