Half Is Better Than None
Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, "Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death." But the other said, "He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him." (1 Kings 3:26, ESV)
One mother rolled on her newborn in sleep. When she found her baby dead in the night, there was no wailing in grief and remorse. She silently traded him for another, like exchanging a torn dress at the mall!
The other mother cherished her son as in irreplaceable gift from the Lord. We'd like to think she considered leaving her lifestyle for his sake.Better to glean in the fields and live hand-to-mouth than bring a child up in such a place. At any rate, when she woke and found a dead little one at her breast, she was horror-stricken-but wait. She knew her child intimately, had pored over every feature and behavior. That was not his nose. His hair was too thin. This is not her son!
The mothers appealed to the court to settlemtheir dispute. It was not an easy matter. Either woman could be lying.Maybe there never were two children, only one lusty child to fight over. How could anyone be sure? One of these women had a baby. The other had attitude. Only Solomon could unravel the deception.
Solomon was an astute observer. With God's wisdom, perhaps he knew the answer before he took the sword. He only needed to prove the truth to the court. With royl authority, he ordered that the living son be cut into two, knowing full well that the child's mother would rather give up than see him die.
God's love for each of us is fiercer even than that of the good mother. He knows us intimately, and we are irreplaceable in his heart. He created our inmost being and knit us together in our mother's wombs (Ps 139). He surrendered his own happiness on the cross rather than abandon us to death. He has only good in mind for us...for our children... and for our children's children.
