A common misconception regarding the deadlift is that its a good back exercise, and this is a bit inaccurate.
The reason is because the function of the deadlift is hip extension using the hamstrings and glutes. You do get engagement in the back, but that’s because your are holding a heavy weight with the scapula engaged, in an isometric position.
Example: During a bicep curl you are engaging the bicep through a concentric and eccentric motion. This is what makes it a bicep exercise. During a deadlift, you are engaging the glutes and hamstrings through a concentric and eccentric motion, while the back remains in a isometric position, making the deadlift a glute and hamstring exercise. - 5 hours ago
