There is no "better" way to body shame someone.
And there is no legal way to tell a woman she can't breastfeed covered or UNCOVERED in public or private in New York State no matter what the reason is.
I bring up these three specific points because of the relaxed response I've been hearing since being asked to cover up two weeks ago while breastfeeding in a local business: "Oh, I heard, so sorry they handled it so poorly. That's just how that person is...."
Saying "that's just how a person is" is in a sense allowing them a pardon for their poor behavior, letting them off the hook. Nothing is learned and no progress is made.
Two weeks ago the woman owner of @russells_store in Bovina Center NY pulled my shirt down to cover my breast and my son while he was nursing at her store. She declared that I should cover up and that as the owner of the business in which I sat she could do that and what I was doing might make some people uncomfortable. She explained over and over again that "if I owned a business" I'd understand having to make decisions such as hers to ask me to cover myself while feeding my child in her store.
Well I do own a business. One where I do not shame your body and where you are always welcome to feed your child. It also just happens to be a business that celebrates and stands up for being a woman.
I left the store, and will never go back to Russel's while it is under this owner.
If you need any explanation on why breastfeeding is protected by law to be allowed in public, why and how not allowing it and this specific situation is body shaming, why this matters, and how and why there wasn't any "better" way for her to ask me to cover myself while feeding my son PLEASE message me. I am prepared to talk about it or explain it to whomever needs explanation. And to all of you in the Catskills this weekend consider who and what you are supporting when you purchase from their business.
