* Flashback Friday - Lightsaber Rotoscoping Practice, feat. Ray Park *
Lord, this was a project if there ever was one! It's over its one year anniversary this April, but I remember this project like it was yesterday: lightsaber rotoscoping. Now as taboo as it is to say, I grew up on the Star Wars prequels and loved them dearly...and love them still. Summer of 1999, a horned, tattooed Sith Lord who ignited the very first DOUBLE-BLADED LIGHTSABER was what drove my 7 year old self to that movie theater. I will never forget how excited I was every time the incredible @iamraypark came up as Darth Maul and did his Sith thing!
This project was sort of a homage to the initial spark that lit my Star Wars fandom, I decided I was going to finally animate my own lightsaber (only the coolest weapon in the universe). Little did I know how extremely tedious this process would be. Each blade at one point or another is obscured by either Ray Park's body or by cameras and heads in the forefront (I had to go frame by frame and make sure the blade was not only swinging in the right direction, but was also being masked out by any obscurities). I wanted to do the entire footage, but after a MONTH spent on this project, I just decided I had to call it quits, but what I got in my end result I'm still very proud of, especially this being my very first attempt. I also included and modified classic lightsaber isolated swing sounds to fit the speed of Ray's twirls with the blade! May the Force be with you!
