Day 5. Saturday. June 23. Japan.
The "coexistence of nature, architecture & art" is the concept behind the whole Benesse complex that houses both A hotel & the Benesse House Museum. The museums permanent collection & site-specific works includes Walter de Maria, Cai Guo-Quiang, Tom Wesselman, David Hockney, Yukinori Yanagi (which Jeb liked) , Jean Michael Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Jennifer Barkett & many more. Unfortunately, you can't take photos inside the Museum. .
My favorite amongst the artworks on exhibit both inside & on the groundswould be Bruce Nauman's 100 Live & Die (1984). You sit across these huge art piece neon lights display made up of combined words "which express human behaviors, emotions, races, physiological phenomenon", with the word LIVE & DIE. Evocative. I sat there with these random sentences flashing at me & i started reflecting on my own life. It was made in 1984 but still is very much relevant today. .
The other work I love is that of Kan Yasuda - The Secret of the Sky. 2 oval marble sculptures inside a high exposed concrete space. It is so comfortable, I thought I was gonna fall asleep. The marble is cool & the concrete walls around it feels cool. The whole place was cold even at 3PM. No roof so as you lay down the stone, you look up at the sky & as the artist wants you to do, connect with it and get to know it. .
But of course, aside from the artworks inside & outside this complex, it is Tadao Ando's architecture that is the biggest art of all. Nakakaiyak! The whole museum in itself is one big architectural sculpture. ️ I was telling Jeb what a genius he is. His cement feels cold to the touch. I was hugging the walls of the complex. .
Of course, a crowd & tourist favorite is Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin which is by the dock near the hotel guests house.
Day 1 on the island was nice.
This island is what brought me here to Japan for my 40th. this is no. 2 on my #birthdayadventurelist
