“Yan na ang mga JANITOR FISH!” It was only our third cleanup in Matabungkay and the locals already dubbed us “janitor fish”. Close na ata kami!
Kidding aside, we know that our cleanups can create only little impact on the environment. But besides conducting beach cleanups, one of our goals is to educate and mobilize coastal communities in taking care of the environment they live in. Now that the locals recognize our efforts in keeping Matabungkay Beach clean, we hope they also realize what stuff do not belong in the ocean and pull them out. We hope they learn to call out tourists who dump garbage in their waters. When this happens, our collective efforts will surely make bigger impact.
We’re very grateful to Sir Jojo Gorecho, Kuya Ernie Malinay, and another local who helped us in our underwater cleanup. We’d also like to thank Barangay Chairman Ernie Cabahug for providing us snacks after the cleanup. Thank you, sirs!
Special thanks to Kandahar Cottages for accommodating us and to @freediveph for our buoy.
