Working on some new power drills today!! This one I like as you have a-bit of everything, single leg lateral and linear power along with a vertical at the end. It’s not just about generating power it’s also about stability and balance, you can’t generate power if you haven’t got stability. Between 3-5 reps per side works really well, this drill is about quality not quantity so do it fresh at the start of your session as a power activation drill! @feelfitgym @omaa_oxford

What is it ? 
It’s a method of power training used by many team and individual sports. In the simplest of terms, plyometrics are exercises that involve a jumping movement. For example, skipping, bounding, jumping rope, hopping, lunges, jump squats, and clap push-ups are all examples of plyometric exercises.

Why do them ? 
Performances in any sport that involves jumping, sprinting or kicking can be improved with lower body plyometric exercises. Performance in sports such as basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, tennis, badminton, golf and the throwing events in athletics can benefit with upper body plyometric exercises.

How much should I do ? 
The goal is to train for maximum force production in the smallest period of time, so reps are kept low and the intensity and effort is high.

Strength and power training in football is a fundamental part of their strength and conditioning programme.

Strength refers to the muscles ability to exert a force against a load. A footballer exerts forces both internally (against a bone to be able to move their limb) and externally (against the ground to move the body in a certain direction, or against an opponent and the ball). Strength is an important attribute in footballers because it allows for a more forceful application of skills, provides the foundations for power development, and reduces the risk of contact and non-contact injuries.

What this tells us is that powerful athletes are able to rapidly exert large forces. Therefore, power is an important training component for footballers coming in useful to exert the necessary forces in minimum time frames to execute the necessary skill i.e. accelerating, jumping and striking the ball.

Therefore, the objective of a footballer is to increase the amount of force they can produce (i.e. strength), and then produce this force in as little time as possible.

The actions performed in football are a result of multi-joint, multi-muscle movements, with muscles coordinating with each other to produce efficient movement, multi-directional forces and a stable structure to produce them movements. Therefore, football strength programmes will be designed around these movements.

So, if you're looking to develop optimal levels of power, here's a few exercises you can start with.

1. Barbell High Pull

Stand with your feet hip-width apart as you tightly hold a barbell in front of your waist. Hinge your hips back while keeping your spine straight as you lower the bar to slightly above your knees.

Explosively push your feet into the floor, rise up on your toes as you snap your hips forward and pull the bar straight up the front of your body. Keep your elbows out wide and allow the bar to travel up to chest height before allowing it to drop back down.

2. Band Pulls

Attach a double-band to a solid anchor point and hold one handle in each hand. Sink back into your hips with your feet pressed firmly into the ground and your spine in a lengthened position.

Maintain good body position and use both arms to pull the bands back as fast as possible, bringing the handles toward your waist as you keep a 90-degree bend in both elbows.

3. Explosive Straight-arm Press-downs With Bands
