I’ll be honest, it took awhile for Blueberry Muffin to grow on me. The last time I voluntarily ate a muffin was while I was still living with my parents in high school and they used to buy the ginormous Costco 7.99 tray of chocolate/blueberry/poppy seed variety muffin pack to freeze it to feed it to us for breakfast. Now that I’m semi-conscious of my caloric and carb intake, and seeing how a shameful portion of my carb allotment is filled by beers, it doesn’t leave much occasion for emptier calories from desserts, pastries, etc.
It is interesting, however, that most people that try Blueberry Muffin seem to qualify it under one of two camps; those that appreciate the subtle after flavors of grain and wheat flour seem to overlook the fact that the yoghurt-y lactose and blueberry pretty much dominate all the senses one tends to employ in tasting beer and describing it with words seem to nod with approval at the naming of this beer, while less experienced drinkers that I’ve offered this beer to have called this “blueberry yoghurt,” “what the fuck,” and also, “not beer.”
I’m assuming you care even less about what my strictly normal, non-neckbeard-toting friends think of @greatnotionpdx ’s arguably second most famous beer than what I think about beer in general, but the very reason why it took me so long to appreciate Blueberry Muffin is for the exact reasons that my friends seem confused as to the “muffin” part of the beer; unless you’re one of the dying breed that actually appreciates a decent malt structure in beer and aren’t blindly buying into the Barleywine lyfe (and don’t get me wrong, it is the only life worth living), that last subtle muffin-esque nuance might be lost on you.
This is starting to sound real preachy and snobby so I’ll just cut right into the muffin and butter. There is an unmistakable presence of blueberries, followed closely by a fluffy sweetness and a generous scoop of yoghurt right from the get go on the nose.
