I’ve been slowly chipping away at the disposables and plastics I use, and I’ve made some decent strides:
- I switched to reusable bottles back in college (20+ years ago) and now cycle through a couple @sipbyswell bottles for daily and gym-time water drinkage.
- I made the change to un-paper towels by @marleysmonsters in early 2017 (I love them, and such cute prints, and super durable).
- Last year, I started using reusable menstrual products by @shethinx , @hesta_organic , and @mylenacup (finally, finally, a reusable cup that doesn’t hurt me or leak).
- When yet another tea kettle rusted out this spring, I replaced it with a Yoshikawa steel kettle, made in Japan and build to last. Bonus: sounds like a train. - I bought a basically bomb-proof stainless steel French press for our morning pot of coffee when the last glass press broke. Clink this against the sink? NO PROBLEM.
Pretty good, all in all.
But every damn day, I’m embarassed to say, I still threw away one or two @keurig k-cups. Made of plastic.* In my garbage can. ☹️ 🤦🏻♀️ It seemed utterly ridiculous to use plastic coffee pods with all the other changes I made, so I just removed that bit of waste from my life, too. I needed a slightly more affordable option than the ultra-Instagrammable Chemex, so I went with the @hario_official V60 in size 02 (nice, thick ceramic, made in Japan, $21 on Amazon) and some 100% organic hemp reusable filters from @boliodesigns . And I love the setup. Great cup of coffee. Easy to clean (both the brewer and the filter). Still attractive! Cheaper (by far) in the long run vs. pods. And a satisfyingly lighter trash load on the planet. * There are compostable k-cup-compatible cups offered online, as well as a reusable k-cup filter, if you love your Keurig but would like to quit the plastic waste part of it. I hated the reusables (no matter what I did or which brand I used, they clogged the machine and shot water everywhere), but would recommend folks try the 100% compostable options. I’m really jazzed to see these available.
