Day 19: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Today is about food waste or more to say the prevention of it.
The most obvious one, is to not buy more than you can use up...saves money and resources.
However, I recently also started to specifically ask for the wonky and ugly (much easier at the farmers market or greengrocer but also has worked a couple of times at supermarkets). What I mean is for example, I will buy the brown bananas and ask for a reduction so that they get sold rather than thrown, same with an open net of potatoes etc. Of course, I am not daring to buy open packs of say loose rice but I make a judgement call. I recently have also been thinking about, if it was better to buy reduced, soon to be out of date, packed stuff or to leave it and keep going with unpackaged.
I also often buy the last bit of minced meat at a butchers (perfect for single mummy and son). At our farmers they now also offer damaged (but edible) eggs at a smashing, reduced price to be used on the same day! They thought about food waste prevention and I love it!
