Zero waste challenge day 16 | We’re a little past the halfway point in this little challenge and I gotta say, some serious new habits are forming over here and it feels kinda great. If you don’t know what I’m up to, I’m doing an experiment to see if I can live without the “convenience” of plastic, reduce my waste, save resources, and basically just be more mindful of my impact on the planet. I use quotes because the way we use it, plastic is anything but convenient. We make disposable products out of a material that was designed to last forever, how on earth does that make sense?? Since we started the Plastic Free July challenge we’re eating better, saving money, taking out the trash less, etc.! It’s pretty cool to be able to see just how much our waste has decreased since starting this project, and I don’t think I’ll be going back to living a disposable life anytime soon
So it goes without saying that reducing our waste means we don’t accumulate a bunch of stuff that just gets “thrown away”. We have to be better about our purchasing habits and try to only get things we really like that will last a long time!
One way I prevent the accumulation of unwanted stuff is to keep a running list of everything I want or need for my wardrobe and around the house - the more specific the better. If it’s not on the list, I simply don’t get it!! So I knew to keep my eyes peeled for a short sleeve summery top when we went to the thrift store on Saturday. Found this blouse for $4 and I love it more than most of the crap I ever bought new. Shopping secondhand is one of the best ways to preserve our scarce resources, including money!
What’s your favorite thing you bought used? Any hand-me-downs or even something you found? Also, how do you keep your home from becoming a clutterfest? Do you have any rules about what you bring into your space?
