February is Black history month ✊🏟 so will share images of my favourite actors and entertainers here on Vintage Movie Club.
These are some fantastic behind the scenes images from one of the greatest films out there, In the heat of the night, 1967. A very important film - no question, with stellar performances from both my favourite, Sidney Poitier and the great Rod Steiger, whom won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the small town police officer.
This is one of those films that have been glued on my mind ever since I first saw it, and a film I constantly draw examples from and references to. A masterpiece.

Sunday usually starts off slow for me, by design. That being the case I like to have a “film session” before diving into work the second half of the day. This week’s flick is the timeless story ‘A Raisin in the Sun’. Happy Sunday, ya’ll 🙌🏟😎👍🏟👍🏟

"Sidney poitier is a man of grace and poise. I love his smile and not to mention he was a fox in his day...he's royalty in the acting world"

In 1964,[2] Poitier became the first Bahamian and first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor[a] for his role in Lilies of the Field.[3] The significance of these achievements was bolstered in 1967, when he starred in three successful films, all of which dealt with issues involving race and race relations: To Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, making him the top box-office star of that year.[4] In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of classic Hollywood cinema, ranking 22nd on the list of 25.

Poitier has directed a number of films, including A Piece of the Action, Uptown Saturday Night, Let's Do It Again, with Bill Cosby; Stir Crazy, starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder; and Ghost Dad, also with Cosby. In 2002, thirty-eight years after receiving the Best Actor Award, Poitier was chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Academy Honorary Award, in recognition of his "remarkable accomplishments as an artist and as a human being".[5] #blackexcellence #blackhistorymonth #day23 #sidneypoitier

It’s possible for a movie to be good without guns and romance, although I don’t have a problem with either of those. I mentioned a few days ago that my son and I were reading The Lillies of the Field for his literature class, and tonight the whole family watched this classic movie. The kids are now big Sidney Poitier fans! (Hubby and I have been for years.)

Day 20 #blackhistorymonth should have belonged to the incomparable #sidneypoitier (who celebrated his 91st birthday February 20th). But my personal tributes were derailed by some birthday shenanigans and sadly another devastating school shooting. That being said, I want to get back on track by honoring Mr. Poitier, the epitome of an elegant man. Almost regal in his speech and carriage, his eloquence is simply transfixing. The first time he entered my life was on screen in “Look Who’s Coming to Dinner”. A film full of thoughtful introspection and conversation. Poitier plays a doctor brought home to meet his fiancé’s white parents #spencertracyandkatharinehepburn. All three deliver unforgettable performances. They gingerly, kindly and honestly try to work through the minefield that was interracial marriage in 1967. (Some may argue it’s still full of land mines). The movie came out just months before I was born & we’re still trying to navigate race relations today. I just turned 50. Watch the movie. Not only will it take you back to time when love wasn’t black and white, but to a time when we could have a civil discussion about it. #blackhistory #february #personalhonorees

Sidney Poitier is a hero of mine and one of the reasons I chose the career path of an actor. He broke all the rules, defied the “norms”. He was a quiet, fierce and powerful talent THAT WOULD MT BE DENIED. Full of dignity and fortitude he set the table and gave inspiration to the future generations including me. Do yourself a favor and watch this genius work. You’ll be a better actor for it.

This week on my radio show Jazz on the JNote, we continue our black history series on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and celebrate those black conquerors who pushed boundaries in the world of acting. There are so many television shows and movies that have dramatically affected my life because people who looked like me were being represented on the big screen and changed the face of acting to sumptuous entertainment for people with black skin; many of which I watched with eyes of love.

This week’s show was inspired by the wonderfully penned Marvel comic screenplay, Black Panther, that is unlike any other because of its featuring a black superhero, images of black aristocratic people well bedecked with jewelry and fine clothes, talks about issues concerning black people of this world and is something I think it totally worth seeing.

Here is How You Can Listen

Tune in Sunday February 25, 2018

Today’s fictional Black History Month hero is Walter Younger from Lorraine Hansberry’s revolutionary play A Raisin in the Sun. Debuting in 1959, it was the first play written by a black woman to be produced on Broadway. Walter Younger lives in a ramshackle one-bedroom apartment on Chicago’s south side with his wife Ruth, son Travis, sister Beneatha, and his beloved mother Lena (Mama). The story opens with the family dealing with the loss of Walter’s father and deciding how to spend his $10,000 life insurance payout. Walter dreams of being wealthy and wants to invest in a liquor store partnership with some friends. Mama uses some of the money as a down payment on a new house in an all-white neighborhood, simply because it was more affordable than one in a black neighborhood. Mama eventually acquiesces to Walter’s pleas and gives him the remainder of the money, provided he sets aside a portion for his sister’s education. Walter’s dogged pursuit of wealth blinded him to the bad intentions of his friends, who sadly, disappeared with all of his money. Adding to his indignity, a representative of the neighborhood they plan to move to offers to buy the family out so as to avoid any “tensions” over a black family moving in. [Note: The precedent setting Supreme Court case involving Hansberry’s own family, Hansberry v. Lee, 311 U.S. 32 (1940) is worth a read as an interesting backdrop to this story]. The creeping desperation plaguing Walter about his family’s financial future has him considering the offer. Mama, the play’s heart and soul, reminds him that, even if money is a necessity, one should never allow others to use it to define you as unfit or lesser than. Walter, flawed though he is, is a dreamer who not only wants his family to be secure, but also to have it all. It’s easy to relate to that. Langston Hughes asked, “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” Walter chooses pride and self-worth, rejecting the buyout offer. As the family prepares to move into their new home, their future is uncertain, but we know that Walter is still dreaming. “I want to fly! I want to touch the sun!” “Finish your eggs first.”
