“If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything”... I used to hear this quote when I was younger but didn’t know exactly how it applied to me.  The older I get, the more I see how it relates to relationships, personal values, competing in figure and especially the growth of @bodymassgym .
.
When Kris and I first opened Bodymass Gym, we wanted to create an environment of Small Group Personal Training focused on quality coaching & results driven programming via strength training.  The problem was we were walking into a world where the norm is High Intensity Conditioning workouts
.
Over the first few months we derived a majority of our new clients and eventually members from ClassPass.  We wanted clients to be knocking at the door to get into our Build workouts and truly see value, just like we do, in heavy strength training- but many of these ClassPassers didn’t even know what a barbell was
.
The problem was that people coming to our gym were used to a “kick your butt, feel like you’re going to pass out” workout, and that’s not what we wanted...but they were demanding it!  They wanted Blast, and maybe even two Blast workouts back-to-back.  They wanted something faster and sweatier, and heart rate pounding.  They were used to heart rate monitors dictating their success in a workout rather than quality progressive movements week after week, and truly committing to the long term

I very vividly remember having a conversation with Kris about two years ago.  I told him that we need to offer more Blast workouts and nix Build.  We need to give these clients what they want.  We need to succumb to the “norm” around us and back away from what we know will provide results in order to make money and keep people happy
.
Kris truly thought about doing this and ultimately said to me that we need to stick with our gut, even if business and classes are slow, even if people don’t see the value of strength training we need to continue to go above and beyond with customer service and educate everyone on the value of strength training,, eventually they’ll come around

Like all of us moms experience after new little ones, she wasn’t feeling good about her weight and how she felt & knew she was ready to do something about it. Possibly my “quietest” FitCamper (although she loves to crack me up when she does talk), she’s all business when she comes to work out and KILLS it on box jumping, battle ropes, pretty much anything I challenge her with.

More contextual sprint based exercises for @janeholmes90 - SLRDL to press 🏃🏼‍♀️💨 Our Athletic Performance Coach @matcookcoaching consistently tests all his ‘running‘ athletes with different variations like this to challenge their hip and trunk stability but we aren’t forgetting about what underpins the ‘cooler stuff’ so he’s included a 200kg (not including the sled) prowler push just for good measure. Very strong 💪🏼

Working on chin-up first thing in the morning is no easy feet!

The band-assisted chin-up is a great way to begin to develop the strength and movement pattern required to perform a chin-up, or to finish a session once most of your energy has been depleted.

This variation, like the traditional chin-up, strengthens the upper back, biceps, and forearms. 
Performing this exercise with bands decreases the resistance provided by body weight and gravity, allowing beginners to learn and progress through the movement pattern, and more advanced gym goers to finish a session strong.

Bodymass is expanding into the Columbia Heights/Park View neighborhood of DC in late summer and growing our group schedule in Arlington so we are looking for a couple good coaches to join our team! My Small Group Personal Training (SGPT) program you get the feel of one-on-one in a small group setting (2-12 people). Workouts are systematic, structured, and periodized. They involve strength and resistance training - weight training, with less time spent on aerobic and cardio exercise. 
Workouts are structured to target certain body parts or exercises in a split fashion throughout the week and monthly/yearly periodization is done in as well, so you’re always progressing and moving in the direction of your goals rather than plateauing. 
There’s also more of a coach relationship instead of just a trainer or instructor one, You have guidance and direction not just a predetermined set of exercises or routine that everyone follows without factoring in personal adjustments. 
Because of this (above) and the small group nature, I’m able to identify and adjust your exercises, form, execution to allow each person in a SGPT workout to have their best workout possible and prevent injury. 
Not all members have the exact same goal, but the nature of structuring and periodizing training is what allows them to train together and if and where adaptations need to be made they can be. 
Other positive aspects of SGPT? 
Social atmosphere of being amongst other individuals. Having a training partner to support you, accompany you, and hold you accountable is priceless.

Training at prime times of the day without competing with another individual who might want the same time slot. Early morning, mid morning, and afternoon or evening times are common, but there’s only so many hours in the day. This opens up a time slot for multiple people to train during. 
SGPT is absolutely affordable! Personal training sessions may cost anywhere from $50 to $120 for EACH session. Where as with a small group program a monthly membership would break down your workouts to a reasonable cost of say $10-30 each.
