Watching The Green Mile in my cell
Elliot in prison, HMP Thameside, UK
The lights are flickering along the long rows of bars in a cellblock containing the worst of human kind. The buildings walls echo death as the prisoners sit in solitude, only kept company by the visiting rodents. Thank God I’m not there. I’ve seen the Green Mile a few times but watching it while in prison myself, is a different experience. Although my cell is a bit better to live in, I identify with the emotions and isolation, the lack of control over your own life. I imagine sharing a wing with the man mountain John Coffey, witnessing his healing powers as locusts flutter out of his mouth. The reality though is that prison is just mundane monotony, eating the same shit, having the same conversations, sitting in the same seat, deprived of liberty, day after day after day, staring at four walls listening to men shouting at each other out the windows. Boring. I sometimes watch police shows, seeing people get busted in the same fashion as I was, hunted down and stamped into the concrete, deemed unsuitable for the standards syphoned down into society from the selected few. I watch addicts targeted like animals and thrown into cells in between adverts glamorising alcohol and iPhones, promoting dependence and glorifying greed. The electric chair fries the prisoner’s head after he’s been told of his execution by the state, Death Row, The Green Mile. In a way, we’re all just sat in cells, waiting for the day it’s all over. I reach for the remote and turn the TV off.
