Dating from 1549, the Menara Kudus Mosque preserves the tomb of Sunan Kudus, one of the Wali Songo. The Menara Kudus Mosque, or known as the Al-Aqsha Mosque, is considered as one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia, as it is believed that the mosque was built during the Islam's spread through Java. Hence, the architecture of the mosque is a mix between Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist architecture, believed to be derived or influenced from the previous Majapahit Empire. For example, a bedug or a large skin drum is located in a tower instead of a verandah, resembling a Balinese Hindu temple kul-kul or signal drum to alert fire or incoming enemies. The Wali Songo is a famous group of nine Islamic saints of Java, that taught and spread Islam religion and philosophy.
