In today's post, we want to talk to you about the simple, yet complex parts of restoring a family to the original design.
Perhaps the most important prerequisite to restoring the Christian family is communication. People talk but cannot hear, and sometimes they hear somewhere deep in the heart but fail to find the words that adequately convey the heart's meaning.
Necessary to communication is putting aside all the things of our carnal character, the self-centered traits, and practices that keep us from hearing each other's heart.
How does this apply to marriage? To understand that, we need to understand how we are made as men and women. (Gen. 1:27), "And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Since both are created in His image, God must have attributes that are analogous to both genders. Both male and female each have a God-given role in marriage. Yet in their common humanity, they share traits and resultant impulses that enable them to fulfill their common calling.
If a husband doesn't continuously cultivate his own direct relationship with Jesus so that the Lord fulfills and satisfies him, in some ways he will end up playing God.
Until we allow the Lord Jesus Christ to fill that God-shaped space in us, we will demand that our spouse will fill it. The Lord is the only whole One who can complete both sides of our being. If we find abundant life in Him, He blesses us with a sweet fullness through our spouse's presence. Furthermore, we also have to trust in Him that He enables them to take risks in the relationship without demanding or controlling. (Matt. 13:12).
