Today I sent off an athlete/client of mine to college. He will swim division 1 on the east coast. 🥇🏊🏻‍♂️ .
For those who do not know, or haven’t asked, I sort of have two jobs. I am a personal trainer. I have my CSCS certification through the NSCA. I am also a strength coach. 💪🏼🏋🏼‍♂️ .
Both jobs are equally rewarding. Both are equally challenging. Both are equally fun. I train around 25 clients at my gym, and coach an additional 30-40 swimmers through strength and conditioning. 🏊🏻‍♂️🏋🏼‍♂️💪🏼🥇 .
I work side by side with physical therapists and a dozen other awesome training professionals to keep my clients healthy, fit, and strong. .

Goblet squats are my fave move for beginners! So much less intimidating than barbell squats and they groove the squat pattern beautifully.
So let’s do them right!

The issue on the left is that I’m not keeping my chest up during the squat. I’m folding at the waist and it’s causing my hips to pop up and my chest to fall forward.
.
We fix this by focusing on a tall, proud chest during the entire squat movement. We’re also bending at the knees and hips fairly equally here to keep the hips low.
.
If you’re not used to this type of movement, it’s not going to feel comfy (no one ever said weight lifting was comfort inducing). It will feel like a lot of effort for your back to sustain this position, and that’s okay! That’s why I focus so much on building and maintaining a strong back, because it’s the stabilizer for all other moves. 💪

It's so easy to make and if you want, you can increase the amount of malt you use to deepen the flavour and make it stickier and squidgier

It's a delicious way to increase your carbs with very little impact on your daily fat intake at just 13 grams of fat for two loaves

Muskeln: Quads, Glutes, Hamstring und Hipflexors werden trainiert.
Ausgangsposition: Stelle das TRX auf Wadenhöhe. Blick ist weg vom Verankerungspunkt. Ein Bein ist in der unteren Schlaufe des TRX. Dein Core ist angespannt. 
Ausführung: Beuge nun dein Standbein und schiebe das andere Bein zeitgleich nach hinten. Die arme bewegen sich entgegengesetzt zu den Beinen. Drücke dich nun zurück in die Ausgangsposition.
Wichtig: Die Ferse bleibt immer am Boden, dein Knie bleibt neutral über den Mittelfuß ( kein kollabieren in Valgus oder Vargusstellung) und dein Core stabilisiert deinen Oberkörper.

Rehab can and should be fun. 🏃🏼‍♀️🤗🤸🏼‍♀️ A few weeks ago any sort of squatting and lunging bothered her knees. With some strengthening and load management we got her back to smiling and jumping. 
This is want rehab should be about for athletes.

Here’s an application of the “progression based on competency + increasing archetype movement complexity” concept I talked about in a previous post. .

The first clip shows a loaded Single Leg Squat to box which is a difficult movement to perform since it demands a high level of balance, hip stability, unilateral strength & an overall strong squat pattern. Obviously tempo & load can be manipulated to increase/decrease difficulty (almost indefinitely) but introducing a lateral glider adds a second layer to the movement and challenges the athlete in another plane/new muscle groups/patterns. .

HOW TO DO PULL UPS THAT WORK YOUR ENTIRE BODY (A.K.A. PROPER PULL UPS)
.
Let me start by saying that I lost me form during a few reps, specifically during the portion of the rep when I’m lower myself down. You’ll understand why this is true when I explain how “proper pull ups” should be done.
.
1) Hang from the bar/handles with your knees straight and your feet in front of your body’s centre line.
2) Your shoulders should be shrugged towards your ears.
3) Tense/Contract your abs as if expecting to receive a punch in the stomach. This should help you keep your ribs down and minimise spinal movement (i.e., extension-flexion).
4) While maintaining the plank-like rigidity of your body, start by pulling your scapulae (shoulder blades) down and back then following with pulling your elbows to your sides. Your body should look like a moving plank.
4) Your scapulae should remain down and back throughout the pull.
5) Only pull as far as you can go while maintaining the execution described.
6) Do not attempt to pull your elbows back until they pass your sides just to get your chin to clear the bar height; a mistake most people do. This will cause your shoulder joint to roll forward, putting pressure on sensitive tissue at the front of your shoulder which can cause pain/injury.
7) If you cannot pull your own body weight up, not a problem; use resistance bands. Google: pull up assist bands.
8) When performing band-assisted pull ups, the same execution instructions apply.

The total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is the energy you spend on a daily basis. Depending what you are doing each day, this can vary quiet a lot. If you are sitting all day long like a coach potato and doing nothing, your TDEE would be pretty low. However, if you are really active, your TDEE would be elevated.

Now, lets take a look at the single components and how they contribute to your TDEE.
.
BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate is the minimal quantity of energy required to cover the functions of your body such as breathing or blood circulation. If you would eat less than the minimal energy required for a long period of time, you would die.
.
TEF: Thermic Effect of Food is the energy cost your body needs to convert food into energy. It varies for each macronutrients.
.
NEAT : Non-Exercising Activity Thermogenesis is the energy spent when you are not training. Basically every kind of activity you can think of that does not involve training, such as talking, walking around, moving your head etc.
.
TEA: Thermic Effect of Activity is the energy spent during your workouts, simple as that.

By understanding those components, you could easily manipulate your energy intake. So if you want to eat more during your lean bulking phase or burn more calories during a diet, just increase your NEAT or TEA.

Many Roads Lead to Rome. I LOVE THIS!! This is SO TRUE! Consider this, anything that works for you likely won’t work forever, as the body is always seeking some sort of Homeostasis or Balance. This is true with Exercise, Nutrition, Relationships, and life. As Humans we often get sucked into black and white thinking and adhere strictly to one  Methodology. At some point, tweaking (not Twerking) what you’re doing to get a specific outcome is essential for continued and long term progress, even if the same goal is sought after.

My favorite piece of equipment in the gym is the glute ham raise!  I know this thing takes up a lot of space and can be pricey, but trust me it’s worth it, not only for doing glute ham raises (as shown above) but there are so many other awesome things you can do with it.

Unfortunately, most people butcher the glute ham raise exercise by not staying solid in their abs and glutes making this look like the worm!  Start out with negatives (slowly lowering yourself down only) and then progress to going up and down.  If you do this correctly, you should feel your hamstrings almost ripping off the bone (my clients favorite way to describe it). Cable Front Foot Elevated Split Squat

Place the low step in front of your cable pulley, with the cable attachment set at approximately ankle height. Working your non-dominant side first, place your foot on the step, and hold the cable handle in the opposite hand. Stand with a split stance, and keep both shoulder blades pulled down and back to create stability and tension though the upper body. 
Travel forwards and down, aiming to get the hamstring of the lead leg touching the calf of the same leg, and keep your torso upright. 
Avoid bouncing at the bottom of the movement; instead carefully push back off the lead leg to the start position, and repeat for the prescribed number of reps. *Note - a slow eccentric (or, lowering) component in this lift is advised so as to keep tension through the target muscles, and not letting the movement become a ballistic one - potentially leading to injury.

Hey. It’s your favorite mess of a human here. Story time: 
One time a puffy little heavy lifter tried to film tutorial videos like an insta babe. They were going to be for clients and her site. After creating an overwhelming and impressive list of movements, she started to stress. Once in the gym she began to film and progressively got frustrated. The video is the last time she missed the camera TWICE before loading a bar and conventionally deadlifting it until she couldn’t hold on to the weight anymore. That’s cardio right? Some people run to relieve stress I just pull iron🤷🏻‍♀️
