|| Barbell Reverse Lunge ||
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This unilateral lunge variation is one of my favorite single leg exercises to program into towards the C to D series of a training program. It’s a great lower body exercise on its own and with the front squat grip it also works your upper back strength and thoracic mobility while forcing you to hold good posture throughout the movement, while staying upright the whole time. It will also light up your anterior core and glutes as well as improving hip stability and ankle mobility.

BB Reverse Lunge (Front Squat Grip)
➡️ Feet firm on the floor, spread your toes and grip the floor - keep your weight towards mid-foot and heel.
➡️ Eyes face forward the whole time and keep good posture from head to toe.
➡️ Extend one leg back to perform the reverse lunge with a long stride back - the back knee should gentle tap the floor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➡️ Pull through the front heel of your front leg and return to the starting position. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➡️ Point your elbows up, pull in and brace your ribs and rep it out quality reps.

Our summer programme will be sent out soon, so I thought I would share a little infographic on the importance of training over the summer to avoid excessive declines in fitness 🏃🏼‍♀️🏋🏽‍♂️ ————————————
You don’t really want any excessive increases or decreases in training load. Injuries are more likely in these periods without proper programming. So we hope to maintain a maintenance over the break 🤓 ————————————
We will be testing our teams when they come back and hope that they maintain a certain level of performance. Be ready 😏😜

One main aim here as already mentioned, is to reduce injuries in preseason, going from a complete summer standstill into a tough first 1 or 2 weeks isn’t the best idea! Injury rates are high 🤕 ————————————

Here is a drill to fix a saggy midsection as you press or do pushups.

Place a challenging band around a barbell, then on your foot. Get in a good solid plank position and then press the barbell as if your were doing a standing overhead press. 
Stay on your toes without letting yourself move forward as you press. Enjoy the pressing goodness and new levels of strength.

This was my first competition photo and as you can tell I loved it. Here is something most people don’t know:
- I had no posing coach or trainer help
- I had no real diet
- I didn’t even know what poses to practice and did so the day before.

What I did have was pure grit and work ethic. I taught myself and became much more skilled so I could help others. -

5 years ago when I left my job in finance, I remember telling my grandpa I was changing career and going into fitness. He then revealed that when he was younger his dream job was to be involved in physical fitness.

Unfortunately, when he was younger it wasn’t really a viable career option, so he went into finance and accountancy. Then moving on to running his own post office when he moved to the UK, and fighting off countless attempted armed robberies with my grandma.
.
He passed away a year ago today, but even to the last day of his 89yrs he stayed as active as he could. He might not have been keen on the heavy deadlifts, but I know his routine included biceps curls and push ups everyday - Definitely think he was on to something there.

Deads: 3x3 @ 80%
Speed Deads: 3x3 @ 65%
Stiff Legged Deads: 3x5
And all the curls and Push Ups.

There could be a couple of reasons, everything from cueing to losing tightness and bracing to weak hip musculature. But addressing weakness on a movement through targeting muscles is not the first go-to solution.

You always want to address the problem with a movement first and then back it up with developing the right musculature.
.
One thing you can try are deficit deadlifts as well as strengthening the hips through hinge-like movements that force the hips to hold height throughout the movement.
.
I will go through this in more detail at the upcoming Not Another Deadlift Workshop (swipe left for info). We will go through the deadlift of every person in attendance and film it and analyse it thoroughly to find all problems then prescribe solutions to those movement problems and weaknesses.

Had the absolute pleasure of training these two legends today and making some much needed progress with their deadlifts @bondielle getting a clean single at 90kgs and some clinical sets of 60kgs👌 @santi_1996 hitting a volume PB of 190kgs x 4 with more in the tank! As I reflect on the past 10 years I've competed in bodybuilding along with the last couple of years in powerlifting.
One thing im really happy about is that I've not lived like a bodybuilding robot!

I've been to Ibiza partying at least once or twice through every single 1 of my competetive years, along with loads more fun times all over the world partying in the likes of Marbs, Vegas and Miami.
-
I've always gone on nights out, clubbing and enjoying myself along the way, and when I've dieted I've always had a cheat meal through my diet till 2 weeks out.
-
One sad thing that I see, is kids devoting there whole lives to bodybuilding, sacrificing familiy, friends and relationships, going 15 weeks without a meal off plan through prep just to place 5th at the Donald duck classic!

In my opinion unless your going to be Mr Olympia (which you will know within a couple of years of training if this is possible) have fun, enjoy life, go on holidays, go out for that meal, yes when it comes to prep give it your all, but don't sacrifice having a life!!

I've done well over the years whilst also living my life to the full and thats 1 thing I'm really happy about!!

This is why 99% of the time I recommend high bar over low bar for athletes! Why place extra load on your spine for a few extra ego points?

We often assume that low bar and high bar squats have very different characteristics, such that they will produce different effects when used in a long-term strength training program.

This study found that the low bar squat allows a heavier load to be lifted, but this was achieved through greater mechanical advantage and not because higher forces were exerted into the ground. Is Olympic lifting better than traditional strength training for power output?
The short answer: No ❌

Olympic lifting/weightlifting in the form of cleans & snatches have been commonly accepted as effective exercises which can help to improve power and strength🏋🏻‍♂️. Many studies have been conducted showing their positive effect on  indices of power in the lower body including jump height, sprint speed and rate of force development, due to their emphasis of strength speed (although this is highly dependent on load)🏎. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
OL movements require explosive triple extension of the ankles knees and hips, thus allowing overload of similar patterns to that of a jump or start of a sprint. This is normally followed by a powerful shrug and catch, ending in the base position of a squat. There are many weightlifting variants which eliminate the catch, reducing the complexity of the movement such as the clean pull or high pull.

In spite of the benefits mentioned previously, when we consider the force/velocity curve, OLs are not the only type of exercises which can improve power. Many forms of loaded jump can provide the same stimulus such as jump squats and trap bar jumps. All of these exercises require a similar movement pattern at similar joint angles/ranges (explosive triple extension of the ankles knees and hips). It may also be noted that some of these exercises can be easier to learn than OLs allowing more time effectively generating and transferring force and less time practicing a specific lift at a much lower intensity. I will add that this is a contentious point and many coaches may feel differently.

When I’m not competing I will always use a non competition variation for all my main lifts, this is the first I’ve actually tested sumo and will retest again at the end of this training block 📈

WHICH FRUIT TO EAT?

Sweet
If you eating fruits for sucrose (instant energy) then Bananas should never be your go do! Like I don't believe it when people say have Bananas they are slow digesting fruits. Bananas digest slower the most fruits.

Gut friendly
Fruits like bananas, pineapples and mangoes are not gut friendly due to the starch which produce endotoxins. Now you can completely have ripe bananas, and pineapple or mango juice (not shake because it will have the starch)

Serotonin
Is it just a co-incidence that fruits that produce endotoxin and are irritable to the gut increase serotonin? Think about it. I know I am going to get a lot of hate when I'll post a dedicated post about serotonin. But till then just think about the first statement as explaining why serotonin is bad in two lines would be stupid on my part.

Fruits to have
Apples, oranges, grapes, peach, watermelons, pomegranates etc

This week I have my man Manh in on work experience. What a gig for him but the luckiest kid in the school.

Check out this chaotic kettlebell stick front raise exercise. Make sure you’re in a good stable position with scaps retracted. Fantastic exercise to challenge shoulder and trunk stability. 
Give it a go they’re harder than they look. Make sure you move in a well controlled manner or you’ll suffer the fate of the kettlebell to the face.

Haven't done farmers walk in a long long time.

Got to 360lbs with a fat grip handle which makes it even more harder.

A lot of fun to do and doesn't require a lot of time in the gym.

First video is of Taylor hitting unweighted back squats.

Here is what you don't want to see with high bar squats...
🚫 Breaking your hips back 🚫 No Breathing or bracing technique applied
🚫Forward movement of the bar continuously during the decent.

What you want to see (second video)
👌 Breaking at the knees ( surprisingly hips shift back on there own 😎)
👌Correct breathing and bracing techniques applied (When in doubt brace like someone is about to punch you in the stomach 👊👊 it works!) If you are unsure of your squat technique and you do this exercise week in and week out....PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD hire a good S&C coach to help you. In just a few sessions they will be able to fix your form!

You really are only as good as the company you keep.

Going through my 20s was a difficult and confusing time; but they were also great times as I had close friends by my side.

Unfortunately as I got past this time, I realized the people I once counted on are no longer the people I once thought they were.

This is something I've spoken about in my recent seminars.

The the type of people you surround yourself with, will speak volumes about your values and what you stand for.

Our personalities become molded by different situations and environment.

Our company, whether it is our parents, friends or colleagues, all influence our minds and us.

This is why your friends and associates are a reflection of you.

My beliefs and values constantly changed in my 20s, this may be the same for you.

You need people around you that'll bring out the best in you.

When you surround yourself with other people on a constant basis, you are exposed to their personal values and ideals, so it should come as no surprise that you may end up taking on some of their mentality as well.

This is why it is so important to remain aware of the people you surround yourself with.

•Concentrate on pulling the Elbows down.
•Keep Chest up & Shoulders externally rotated.
•Hold it.

•Legs: try different positions. Keeping them straight work the Hip Flexors.

Had some good feedback with the squat program I put up awhile back. Here is some of the upper body work that I have been experimenting with lately. Lots of time under tension and slow movement, building that mind muscle connection.
~
Upper Body Posture and Hypertrophy Program (gymnastics focused)
~
I've done this one with some good success in myself and clients. This program can be scaled up or down easily.
~
Tempo is always... 1st number downward portion of movement, 2nd number pause at bottom, 3rd number upward portion, and 4th number pause at the top.
~
41X1 =  So in this case take 4 seconds to descend to below parallel, sit at the bottom for 1 second, EXPLODE [this is mental not necessarily how fast you actually come up] up, pause at top for 1 sec before next rep).
~
W1
Monday
A. 3 sets:
1. Strict Pull-Ups x 3-5 @90X0
2. Ring Bicep Curls x 60 seconds @90X0
3. rest (3 DEEP breaths)
4. Nose to Wall Handstand Hold x 30-60 seconds
5. Wrist Prep x 60 seconds
~
B. 3 sets:
1. Bar/Ring Hang x 60 seconds (feet on ground ok, just hang, mix up the grip)
2. Scapular Wall Slides x 60 seconds
3. Cat Cows x 60 seconds (move each vertebrae as much as possible, move scapulas as much as possible)
4. Ring Face Pulls x 20 reps @5031
~
Wednesday
A. 3 sets:
1. Front Lever Pull-Ups x 30 seconds seconds of work (straight arms, elbows stay locked out)
2. Wrist Prep x 2 minutes
3. Slide Presses x 30 seconds of work (feet slide along the box using a slider or socks)
4. Pike Stretch (hip flexion) x 60 seconds
5. Contralateral Bear Crawl x 60 seconds
~
B. For 15 minutes:
1. Push-Ups x 5 reps @90X0
2. DB Chinese Rows x 60 seconds @2010
3. Glute/Hip stretches x 30 seconds/side
~
Friday
A. 3 sets:
1. Wall Facing Strict HSPUs x 60 seconds @90X0
2. Bat Wings x 60 seconds 53lbs/35lbs per hand
3. Dips x 60 seconds @90X0
4. German Hang on Rings x 60 seconds
~
B. 3 sets:
1. Bent Arm KB Carry (bicep focused, throw some curls in there also) x 90 seconds
2. KB Overhead Tricep Extensions
3. Farmer Carry x 90 seconds (HEAVY)

Try this for 3-4 weeks and add some sets/time as the weeks progress. Improve posture and put on some muscle

Squats (variation smith machine). You have to be careful when squatting with a smith machine. One simple reason, the bar is guided. And even so, there are smith machines angled differently to one another, so slight adjustment to your body position is necessary depending on what smith machine you use. Instead of treating the movement in the exact same way as to a regular squat, treat the exercise like a hack squat where you push “up and slightly back”. Brace your core and squat away!😊👍.

I want to send out a huge congrats to @melissa_peacock who is the 2018 Static Monsters World Champion.  She put up a log press of 85kg or 187.5 lbs and finished the day with 232.5 kg or 512.5 lb 16" axle deadlift to secure her 1st place finish in the U72kg class. .
Mel increased her log press by 27.5lbs and an amazing 72.5 lbs on her deadlift since the @static_monsters qualifier.  Not bad if I do say so myself. 😉

3rd full week back of training and im enjoying it. 
As you can also tell my camera stills are shit house so do not judge me when you see me staring at a wall while shrugging lol 
Let's start with the shrugs. I love working my traps and upper back, they give the back that really 'strong' look. But I've got an impingement on the left side of my neck so I went with a slight variation. Basically instead of shrugging straight up you pull your traps back and up whilst squeezing your rear Delts. #sickpump.

Tuesday's has now become back and biceps. ✔Bent over row
 6 x 10 (1 min rest)
✔Seated shrugs
 8 x 16
✔Lat pull down 
2 x 10 
1 x max
✔A1 face pulls
 3 x 12
✔A2 bicep curls
