2013 saw CINECITY mad with Jan Švankmajer fever, celebrating the life and work of the prolific Czech artist and film-maker. Alongside rare screenings of many of his films (including Alice and Little Otik), we presented an exhibition, The Inner Life of Objects, displaying artefacts from 50 years of film-making. Puppets, sets, costumes, drawings and storyboards sat beside imaginary beasts assembled from bones, shells and stones.
“The world is divided into two unequal camps: those who have never heard of Jan Švankmajer … and those who happen upon his work and know that they have come face to face with genius” - Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
