I’m dreaming of my next visit to Vancouver Island. So much natural beauty that we need to protect. #Repost @ancientforestalliance with @get_repost
Winter sunlight shines through the old-growth forests of FernGully Grove.
In December 2017, Ancient Forest Alliance campaigners and volunteers located one of the finest and last unprotected stands of old-growth Sitka spruce groves on Vancouver Island, located near Port Renfrew. Nicknamed “FernGully Grove” for its dense and extensive understory of ferns, it is located on lands owned by TimberWest corporation, in the unceded traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation people, and is just a 10 minute drive from the town of Port Renfrew.
Similar in feel to a “mini-Carmanah Valley,” the extremely rich, valley-bottom ancient grove is home to an enormous, 11 foot diameter Sitka spruce tree that is the 10th widest Sitka spruce tree in Canada. It is also home to dozens of other 6 to 8 foot wide giants, an understory covered in fields of giant sword ferns, and is exceptional habitat for Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, wolves, cougars, and black bears.
Finding such an impressive grove of unprotected giant Sitka spruce is highly significant, given that the vast majority them on Vancouver Island have been logged in the valley bottoms where they grow.
The Ancient Forest Alliance is seeking information on the possibility of the groves being purchased - either by a land trust or by the BC government - for protection as an ecological reserve. FernGully Grove is a prime example of the kind of endangered ecosystem that could be protected under a provincial Land Acquisition Fund, which we are calling on the new BC NDP government to implement in order to purchase and protect private lands of high conservation or recreational value.
