Photo by @deppphoto : Sediment from the Mississippi River is deposited into the wetlands at Fort St. Philip, Louisiana. This is one of a handful of locations where freshwater diversions from the river carry enough sediment to replenish the wetlands and rebuild the land.
These aerial photographs are from my project, “Bayou’s End,” currently on view at A Gallery for Fine Photography in New Orleans. For three years, I have flown a powered paraglider above the bayous and wetlands of southern Louisiana documenting visual clues of this unique ecosystem’s destruction.
Today, the wetlands on the Louisiana’s Gulf Coast are eroding at the rate of a football field every half an hour. Louisiana has lost 1,900 square miles since 1936, accounting for 90 percent of the coastal marsh loss in the contiguous United States.
With my work I hope to memorialize this vanishing otherworldly environment. #aerialphotography #paragliding #notadrone #coastalerosion #landloss #gulfcoast #louisiana #wetlands - 2 hours ago
