BREAKING NEWS: This is not Rodrigo Koxa. It is Sebastian Steudtner, a 32-year-old pro surfer from Germany who conquered a big wave estimated at 35 meters near Nazare in the Silver Coast area of Portugal. Yes, that's right, 35 meters, which is about 115 feet!!! The record by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa was an estimated 80 feet. I will post that video soon. For whatever reason, this wave was never measured by the @wsl.
That being said, this video has gone viral (I apparently played a role in it due to some messages I received from some of the thousands of commenters) and it has been attributed to Koxa, who received the award for the biggest wave surfed by the World Surf League.
As a journalist who has written for a plethora of publications including ESPN, MLB.com, Tampa Bay Times, and the Associated Press, I pride myself on being as accurate as possible. Thus, I am posting this incredible footage by photographer Javier Goya. Follow him @javi.goya
Sebastian, who told me he kept riding for a majority of the day on January 18 after that humongous wave, won the Big Wave award in 2010 and 2015. He said him and the other surfers experienced some of the biggest waves ever ridden in Nazare, one of the most epic spots in the world for surfing.
