W9D3:  TEMPO! 😁

Tempo Tuesday always sounds cool but I never run them on Tuesday, ☹️. Oh well it was a good one today though!  How do I define good?  Hit my times, shins behaved and I didn’t fall off the treadmill 😁. Wasn’t easy for sure but got it done. Had one twinge in my left shin but it was do to a quirk in my stride. Fixed It and no more issues!! .

W9D1:  Wrapped, Sleeved & Running 😁

Shins were feeling better so it was time to give it a whirl.  5 days off was probably too much but didn’t want to chance it. The deal I made with myself was if I got to 2 with no issues I would go 3.  No issues so of course I ran 3.1 😁😁😁! If there are no residual issues then tomorrow I will do the skipped tempo from last week. .

Tentatively identified a 5k on May 5th as the replacement race.  Keep your fingers crossed🤞 .

W8D5:  Pulling the Plug on the 5k ☹️

Well I’ve made the decision to pull the plug on tomorrow’s 5k. The shins are a little better but not good by any measure. I could probably run it but certainly not race it. I also fear making them worse. So I think I’m making the right decision. .
.
The good news is that this time of year 5k’s are plentiful and I’ve tentatively picked one in early May.  Will concentrate on getting healthy now and plan accordingly. .

W8D3:  SHIN SPLINTS 😡

First let me say I’ve had them before and know how to deal with them.  The real issue is how did I got them this time and the unbelievably bad timing as race day is Saturday!

I’ve had shin splints in the past but take care to stretch my calves etc and that has kept them away for a long time.  Monday was a day off but it was really nice outside so Kelly & I went for a 3.5 mile walk. No issues that night or Tuesday morning on the little 2 miler.  Issues showed up after that run and are still in full on pain mode now.  Walking hurts ☹️. The only thing I did different is I walked in a pair of shoes that I don’t run in. Just a pair of Asics that I use for every day.  They are a trail shoe with a traditional drop and I run in no drop shoes.  Issue?  Wouldn’t think so but something set them off. .
.
So the 5K is Saturday and I’m a little concerned.  I’m taking today off instead of the planned tempo and will see what tomorrow brings.  Just frustrating to say the least 😏

Well I’m down to the Final Week of this 5k training program!  Today was just an easy 2 miles which I will repeat on Thursday. W7D7:  8 Miles - Mental Challenge! .
.
It’s April 15th and the wind chill is 14 degrees 😡. So 8 miles on the treadmill it was.  The mental challenge would be a big hill to climb but I hit it head on!  First 4 miles were pretty easy as I tuned into my audio book and just cruised.  The mental crack came at mile 5 and from there the battle raged.  I was never in danger of stopping but the thought was lurking in the background the whole time.  I then concentrated on 1/2 mile segments and that turned the tide.  My feet started to feel lighter as the 7th mile ticked by and it was a cruise to 8.  Now to get food and I feel a nap is in order!! 😁

W7D6:  Nice Easy Cruise 😁

Bounced back from the interval issues and had a nice easy run this morning. Winter just won’t go away so with cold and wind I opted for the mill. Decided to play a game to keep me focused on the run instead of the stats on the screen. So the deal was each time I looked at the display the speed would be bumped up .1 mph.  Well after about a minute it was obvious that I would be sprinting by the end of mile one 😂. Oh well some things work some don’t.  1 week till the 5k 😁. .

W7D4:  Well 💩 that didn’t go as planned ☹️

The plan called for 8@ 6:00 pace so did my normal warmup and got started. First couple went as expected so was feeling decent. The third one was a struggle and my form was wavering.  Well I started 4 and it just felt like my legs were turning to jelly and on a treadmill at speed that isn’t good.  Got through it and decided that I would back the rest off to 6:40 pace. By the second one of those I had the same feeling in my legs and I was about to puke. UGH!  I almost always run on an empty stomach to help avoid that problem but here it was.  Pulled the plug after  6 and just laid on the floor trying not to puke.  It makes me mad because 3 weeks ago I did 6 @6:00 pace and made them all. 10 days till race day and this is not what I wanted 😡

Traveling this week and took an unplanned day off yesterday. Just felt really tired when I got up so listened to my body and rested instead. Got back on schedule this morning and knocked out the 3 miler.  Back home later today and Intervals tomorrow 😳.

Well this is the longest run I’ve done in quite some time 😁. And back to back with the 5 miler yesterday makes it even better!  It was jus a nice easy cruise. Changed speed and elevation a couple of times to break it up a bit but all in all not too bad.  Have to jump on an airplane later this morning so decided to get the run in early and not let the day get away from me later.  Gotta do what ya gotta do! .

Is this a normal run then?  I felt a little sluggish but not bad.  Cruised but didn’t really settle in to a smooth rhythm anytime during the run. Finished a bit frustrated but probably shouldn’t have.  Well the run is done and the miles are banked so it’s onto a busy day!  Do good work today!!!

I think the true test of a hard workout is the next days run. So I’m declaring the tempo yesterday a success as my legs today were DEAD!  Not much to report other than after about a mile things smoothed out and I cruised the last 2 to finish up. Day off tomorrow 😁. .

This was a mind game from step one, ugh!  No idea why but I just couldn’t get in any type of rhythm and my mind kept saying this isn’t comfortable why don’t you slow down.  Stupid mind 😡. So for 40 minutes I waged a war with my mind and tried to ignore my legs who weren’t too happy with me either, truth be told!  But in the end I got my 40 minute tempo in at the goal pace 😁! .

Friday was my off day and too be safe I bagged the Saturday run as well.  I wasn’t feeling any twinges so the Sunday 6 miler was back on the schedule.  More than a little apprehensively I stepped on the mill to give it a go. Stride felt a little funky for the first 1/2 mile but then smoothed out and was just fine!  A feeling of relief literally swept through my body as the apprehension melted away. Training is back on schedule!! .

W5D4:  I May Have a Problem ☹️

Well this isn’t what I wanted.  Last night I felt a few twinges from the IT Band at the knee of my right leg.  Same leg I’ve had issues with previously. But like most runners I figured it would go away.  In fact when I got up this morning it felt normal but to be safe I hit the treadmill instead of exploring downtown Austin as was my plan.  No go. From the first few steps of the run the twinges returned so I pulled the plug at 1/2 a mile. Day off tomorrow so will re evaluate on Saturday and see how it feels. ☹️

W5D3: INTERVALS 😳

No way am I smiling for this pic, OUCH!  Intervals just hurt, plain & simple.  They are not easy but they do make you faster💪💪. Had 7X .25 @ 6:00 pace today, with .25 recovery @ 10:00 pace. How can the interval seem to last forever while the recovery is over in the blink of an eye?  Oh well, they are done & I didn’t die 😁
