As my coach pointed out, Patagonia run isn’t easy and in fact much harder than most races out there. I was going to take the opportunity to explore this beautiful country and raise funds for Orbis. The 100 mile is a new distance in this race, so it is worth trying given that there is no recce beforehand.
I missed the race cutoff at 120km (circa. 6800 +ve elevation) by a margin. Well, that’s life. I did my best.
It has been a good experience after all. Let me share some thoughts here.
I started off the race quite well and did ok in the first 50km in 10 hours. Then came the really cold weather and I can see snowflakes and the cold penetrate into my hands through the gloves. I then put on my mircro puff jacket, amounting to 4 upper layers and 2 layers for my legs, i.e. one long trousers and my Compressport shorts underneath.
At around 55km to 66km. I fell half asleep twice while I am walking up the mountains. I was alone. I was scared that if I fell asleep, then no one will wake me up and finish the race. I also had hallucinations, seeing things such as wood and rocks moving. I took out a sour candy to wake myself up. But it didn’t work. Luckily, I managed to wake myself up before getting up the difficult mountain - Cumbre Cerro Colorado.
Some runners wearing shorts dropped out as they couldn't withstand the cold weather.
The next morning was ok when the sun came out at around 9am. But it was really cold before dawn.
Racers need to follow the direction of the white ribbons. There were 10 times or more when the white ribbons led us into the river and muddy fields that we must cross. This makes the foot rubbed if you run. You also feel heavy when mud stays on your shoes. Not a very pleasant experience.
I fell a couple of times at the top of the mountain as there were some ice there, and got bruised on my feet. There were a couple of mountains which looks quite vertical to me. I guess they were probably those black slopes in the ski runs.
