One of the biggest movie misconceptions at Ellis Island is thanks to the movie Hitch. Hitch (Will Smith), tries to impress his date Sara (Eva Mendez) by bringing her to Ellis Island and showing her the book that contains the signature of her Great-Grandfather.⠀⠀
Unfortunately records were not kept like this. Every boat had its own manifest and most manifests are now digitized by our partner @statueellisfdn.

If you are watching the Olympics it may be hard to visualize how tall the hill Ski Jumpers are jumping off of. ⠀
The starting point of the Normal Hill jump is 379 feet tall!⠀
That is 74 feet taller than the top of the Statue of Liberty!⠀

Happy Valentine’s Day! ⠀
Cupid was a busy fellow at Ellis Island, often sweethearts reuniting would get married immediately after their inspections, starting their new life in America as a happy couple. Lacking a best man and maid of honor, Ellis Island officials were often happy to step in.⠀

Love is the air this week, and these immigrant women, called picture brides, were all dressed up to meet their grooms to be. ⠀
Picture brides were overseas female pen-pals of men who lived in the United States that courted them for marriage via the postal service. ⠀
Upon arriving at Ellis Island, the couples would meet for often the very first time and be married the next day!⠀
Can you imagine leaving everything you know about the world to cross the ocean and marry a stranger?⠀

Men would often travel to America first, saving up money until they had enough to send their sweetheart over to join them. The men would rent boats to go out to the steamships waiting to dock, armed with roses, chocolate, and bottles of champagne for their Valentine, which they would send up to her via baskets sent down on strings.⠀
Once the women docked they often got hitched right away, in a ceremony like this one!⠀

New York Fashion week is in full swing, so here are a few Ellis Island-era fashion tips. ⠀
Lose the petticoats and trade them in for a straight, American-style dress, and abandon your kerchief for a fancy hat! ⠀
Women in particular were subject to scrutiny and encouraged via advertisements and immigrant aid societies to Americanize their wardrobe for their reunion with their husband eagerly awaiting them at Ellis Island.⠀

When we think about immigrants coming through Ellis Island an image that mostly comes to mind is that of Europeans.⠀
But what you may not know is that out of the 12 million immigrants processed about 140,000 black immigrants, mostly from the Caribbean, walked through our doors. ⠀

Congratulations from all of us at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to US Park Police Officer Keith McDermott and his new K9 partner "Hammer" on their graduation from Explosive Detection Training. "Hammer" was named in honor of fallen US Park Police Sergeant Steven Connell - a fitting tribute on this, the first anniversary of his passing.⠀

On February 6, 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born to Nelle and John Reagan. During his career in Hollywood he appeared in over 50 films.⠀
⠀
He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and in 1966 he was elected Governor of California.Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States in 1980.⠀
⠀
In 1982, President Ronald Reagan asked Lee Iacocca, then Chairman of Chrysler Corporation, to head a private sector effort to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation was founded.⠀
⠀
The Foundation's fundraising drive sparked a dramatic response. The American people contributed more than $700 million (and counting!) to the repair, restoration, and maintenance of these two great monuments to freedom. This 1986 photograph of the President and Mrs. Reagan was taken on Governors Island during the Liberty Weekend centennial celebration.⠀
