“Our weather pattern has changed. It is affecting our important plants, and as a result, our social and cultural lives. Every year we have the reed festival — a national festival of Swazis. Reeds are an integral part of Swazi culture but our reeds are not found in as much abundance as in earlier days.” People in the Kingdom of #eSwatini, formerly #Swaziland, found out that the refrigeration and AC industry consumed big amounts of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which contributed to climate change.
The #UnitedNations Development Programme (#UNDP) helped Palfridge, the only refrigerator manufacturer in the county, eliminate its use of HCFCs completely. “I feel like a hero to be a part of the new technology in helping to create a healthier planet,” said Palfridge technician Nomfundo Shongwe.

The #WorldCup is inspiring refugees to dream big! Peter G. (12) has made himself a football out of plastic bags and ropes, and is practicing his skills.

He fled violence in South Sudan and now lives at Madi refugee camp in Northern Uganda. He loves football, and is supporting France in the World Cup.

With 68.5 million people forced to flee due to persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations, the world’s displaced population reached a new high in 2017. More than half of them are children. "Let us recall that the vast majority of the world’s refugees are hosted in developing countries that themselves face constraints. This responsibility must be shared globally," said #UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres this week.

Women in rural Masvingo, #Zimbabwe, show their creativity by turning UN World Food Programme (WFP) feed bags into aprons!
They are receiving assistance through #WFP's Productive Asset Creation programme. With funding from #Japan, they built community dams and gardens, which also build resilience to climate change and hunger.

WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 80 countries. 📷: @WorldFoodProgramme_official / @ashbaxun

Happy birthday to our Messenger of Peace @Malala and thank you for your tireless commitment to girls' education!

In her own words, "When you educate women, society changes completely." Not educating girls has a very high cost for us all. According to the new @MalalaFund-@WorldBank study, if every girl worldwide received 12 years of free, safe, quality education, lifetime earnings for women could increase by $15 trillion to $30 trillion globally. Women with primary education only earn 14 to 19% more than women with no education at all, but those with secondary education earn almost twice as much. Girls who complete secondary school become healthier, more prosperous adults, with smaller families and children who are less at risk of illness and death and more likely to succeed.
Depriving girls of education has dramatic costs for girls themselves, their families, communities and societies. These include greater rates of poverty, higher rates of child marriage, increased fertility rates, and reduced engagement in personal, familial and community decision making. 📸: UN Photo / Mark Garten

Stiller just concluded a trip with UNHCR to #Guatemala, where he met some of the men, women and children from the North of Central America who have been forced to flee their homes because of violence. "They are vulnerable and have suffered immensely. They need help. UNHCR is on the ground here with its partners providing them with support, protection and shelter," he said. ➡ Scroll through for more pictures. 📸: @refugees / Michael Muller

A woman in Divo, Côte d’Ivoire, shows condoms, her chosen contraceptive method, after a @UNFPA-supported family planning class.

50 years ago, family planning was declared a human right. Yet safe and reliable forms of contraception are still out of reach for hundreds of millions of people. Many resort to ineffective or even dangerous methods, often based on myth and rumour.
No woman should ever be denied the ability to plan her future.

On Wednesday's #WorldPopulationDay and every day, #UNFPA is committed to protecting this human right in more than 150 countries around the world. 📸: UNFPA / Viviane Froger Fortaillie

Atsuko Hirakawa served as a #UnitedNations Volunteer in #Afghanistan. When Bakhtar guesthouse in Kabul, where Atsuko and her team were staying, came under attack by insurgents, five members of the UN family, including two UN Volunteers, lost their lives and Atsuko had to leave the country. Yet, she returned the following year to continue her support to the people of Afghanistan. "I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to serve as a UN Volunteer and for the United Nations, where it is possible to positively influence people’s lives." Every day, thousands of UN Volunteers make the world a better place by promoting peace and development in communities around the globe, while upholding the ideals and aspirations of the United Nations. They come from 160 countries, representing many cultures and backgrounds.
